What do you guys make yours out of?

I have 2.5 inch steel tube im going to sue as the rail and 1.5 steel tube to mount to the frame. how much is too much weight for these?

 I use 3" channel notched on one end for the tube and the other end square cut to weld to frame,or bolt to frame at body support brackets.If you are going to use these for rocker panel protection I would use heavy guage tubing or pipe and weld my support brackets to the frame because sooner than later you will high center a rock or something and these rails will be supporting a lot of vehicle weight (It just dont look cool driving home with your rails and rocker panels all crumpled,or your rails making sparks dragging along the road) Good luck! one good thing on a Sammie it dont take much material.  Later  M.Z.

also make sure that u dont accidently make a "rock hook" outa these things lol

i have seen a few that are to low or to square..they seem to catch more rocks then they should ever be near lol

I was thinking about that. Just a sheet of metal the entire length. But then I thought about cooling, what would it effect? Since mine is my DD i think it may warm up too much without some sort of venting.

  I dont think you could close the under side up enough cause a over heating problem, that would take some serious metal fabbing.Belly pans are good ,but you need to make it easily removable for service and put some drain holes in it.I plan on fabbing one for the T-case,every thing else is pretty well tucked up high.  Later  M.Z.

I used heavy 2x4 tubing for the slider with 2x2 running back to the frame. They are heavy but there is no chance of denting them ;D

The weight ans strength of it will depend on the wall thickness of the metal as well as the size. I've seen some very hefty looking sliders fold up cos they were only 1mm (40 thou) wall thickness

Well, I should start building these soon I guess.

Also looking into a sheet of metel for an entire undercarrage belly pan.
