No Spark...

No Spark...

I searched the forum but found no advise.
I have a 1991 (Built in December of 1990) Samurai.
It didn't run when I bought it.
The fuel pump was seized, I have since replaced the pump & have good pressure.
I've replaced the cap, rotor, plugs & plug wires, which all needed replacement.
I have no spark, never did even before replacing the above.
My feeble clymer manual is no help.
Where should I look?

By the way,
I checked the coil with an ohm meter and it appears to be good.
I have battery voltage at the coil primary.

Are you sure that you have the distributor clocked correctly, could be pointed at number 1 but 180 degrees out. Try pulling the distributer out and turn it 1 full rotation, if this doesn't give you anything it could be a bad distributor.

While turning the engine over I had no spark at all coming from the coil to the distributor cap.  Even if the timing was not accurate, I should have had received a spark each time the igniter passed the sensor inside the distributor cap.

I did observe the rotor turn with the cap off, and that seems to rotote properly.

If your distributor is 180 out, you will not get any spark. If your rotor is pointed at #3 and your coil is sending juice to #1, that is what I mean by 180 degrees out. Your distributor will spin without the cap as you turn over the engine, as it is using the starter and flywheel to get the engine turning. As you said, your coil is working and I see no other reason why you wouldn't get spark, unless you have a faulty distributor, mine went bad a few years ago and I had a similar situation.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate the help, and I'm not trying to argue here but,
If the distributor is 180 out, and your ignition is functioning, you will get spark, just at the wrong location at the wrong time. This is a function of the spark leaving the coil, going through the center of the distributor cap, through the rotor, to the cylinder.
This is timing.
Timing is not my issue.

I get no spark from the coil, regardless of where the rotor is pointed.

If it is an EFI model, then it might be something with your ECU. Check if there's a spark signal going to the coil. Or it might be a simple bad wire somwhere in betwing disty, coil, ECU.

I read the post about testing the ignition circuit at http://carfix.stufftoread.com/ECU/ECU.html.

The site says it is for Sidekick & Geo units.

Will these tests also work on Samurai?

I'd think yes, but you never know....

your dizzy is bad fella.

the ecu only monitors the spark and can not hurt it , assuming it didnt blow main fuses.

my web page is all Kicks.

your dizzy has a cmp connected to an ignitor and runs the coil directly.
it can be made to spark on the bench with 12v supply and your coil.

it has old fashioned mech. advance weights and vac, advance on some models
so the didnt need ecu.

in 91 the added ecu  IN THE MIDDLE controls of spark.

Thank you for contributing to this post and helping me figure out why I have no spark.
You'll have to excuse my ignorance, I don't understand a number of the terms you are using,
I am afterall a Suzuki Samurai novice and don't speak Suzuki-ese.

Plain and simple... Check the wiring for any damage to the distributor and coil wiring... If that's ok, your distributor is toast.

On the firewall, behind the distributor are about three or four connectors.
One goes to the back-up light switch, another to the distributor, and one with two wires, one green and one black go, or used to go, somewhere.  The ends of the wires are bare, like they were pulled out of some sensor or switch, and the wire is about 18" long. I looked to see where this might lead to but could not find anything that seemed to mate with the wires.
Any idea what these wires are?
And, is it possible that this is related to my no spark issue?

There are 2 switches on the transmission. One is the reverse light switch the other is the EGR valve switch. See if both are on the transmission. They are right next to each other.
