My buddy insists on a Front mini spool
« on: March 21, 2009, 11:46:32 AM »
A friend of mine insists that I don't get a rear minispool but get a front mini spool .This would be used on a daily driver. He said that here in Iowa winters a rear mini spool is a bad thing because it just pushes the vehicle straight when you try to turn. He insists that I get a front mini spool and then there would not be problem . And it would only affect anything when the front hubs are locked in.
Thanks,
Raz

You will need to swap to a steel front diff, the mini spool won't work in the stock tracker front end.  You will also need a 96+ extension shaft and passenger side CV.

It also puts a lot more stress on your drivetrain, as you will be dragging one of your tires around every time you turn.  4 wheel drive will be useless for driving on the road, you will be stuck with 3 wheel drive for most things.

I have driven Suzuki's with lockers in the back on ice/snow and have not have any problems.  If your really worried about it spend the extra 100 on a locker instead of a spool in the back.  Otherwise save up your cash and spend the 800 or so on putting an ARB in the back or spend 400 on a limited slip.

I run Lock Rights front and rear in my Samurai, although it is not a daily driver. I wouldn't recommend a spool for any daily driver, I would go with a limited slip or ARB, my 2 cents.

Raz......I'd spool the rear and leave the front open.  The locked front is where you will lose steering control....with both front tires always having power (in 4wd), that is when the front will want to slide straight instead of turn.  I noticed this on mine after I put the locker in the front axle....before, when the front was open, it turned better on snow.

I have a ARB in the front.  When it's lock in it doesn't want to turn.  Snow and mud you have to work hard but it will turn.  Dry dirt it wants to just go straight.

I've heard that these trucks are so light that a spool is ok for a DD.  I had a Chevy PU with a limited slip in the rear.  It slid on every corner.  I just learned to drive that way and it was never a problem.  The truck went through the snow great for a 2wd.

Good luck

They only make one mini spool.  There are several vendors that sell it.....just buy from the one that sells it the cheapest.

I don't know for sure (since I don't buy many parts....I make most of them), but I would guess......
trail tough       trailtough.com
low range        lowrangeoffroad.com
trail gear          trail-gear.com

side note I just got my trailtough mini spool in last night.... would NOT recommend it for a daily driver at all..... it is drive able, but I chose the mini spool over a locker because my tracker is a trail rig.....cornering is not fun with the spool lol my .02 cents
