Winch Mount Points
« on: March 17, 2009, 12:34:23 AM »
Seen some pics of winch mounting points......now I am not crazy about the look of some winch bumpers for the trackers 00-04 so i would like to know of the best mounting points I could mount my own winch bumper too......would like to keep it looking as stock as possible.....

basically I would like the bumper my winch attaches to to look like the polar bear grill (obviously not made for a winch) but since I am making it myself,,,,,,steel thickness and where to mount would be good suggestions (a picture would be helpful) 5000lbs winch....I wanna keep the bumper BOlt on for easy removal(if possible)......

all positive suggestions welcome + links to pics and other info

Talk about looking stock!!! There was a wright up on mounting a winch like that, but I can't seem to find it now. Look through that thread, nice 2nd gen Trackers.

You do know the only "difference" between the Vitara and the Tracker is the name right? Mechanically they are the same truck.

suzi the psychic is older(and more beat up) than what you are talking about, but i am in the process of finishing a winch install on her.
here's a pic of almost done.

i hacked up the bumper and reused some of it. i also cut out the front body and modified what was left of the grill so i could mount the thing up and closer to the radiator.
'89 kick w/little motor, still got pieces of jeff's pucks, stan's sticks into 4.24:1 tcase, 31x10.5x15's, rear lockrite, kick power steering, some radios(kj6esv), bmw seat, other changes just because. done on the cheap.
suzi the psychic gets me fishing.

A little offtrack, but can anyone tell me what kind of tires those are? Icelander MT's?
Also I would suggest fabricating a mount involving a hitch receiver. This comes in handy when you need to winch backwards, which would be more common than winching your self THROUGH the hole your stuck in etc..

lol and thats assuming there IS anything at all to hook a winch tooo.....   anyway I have already fabricated a reciever winch.....but unfortunatly I have to get a better trailer hitch before I can use it......because the one on there now is only a 2000lbs capacity one....ZI might end up fabricating my own trailer hitch/bumper soon too.......not easy though with that gas tank in the way to make a strong one but possible.

Mine is completly rotten off the frame back there, so I am just going to weld in a 2X4 square box tubing, should be solid enough for a receiver. Shouldnt need more than a 3500lbs atv winch for a tracker... correct?

Using a snatch block pulley with your winch line (double lining the pull) doubles your pull ratio.  So... if you have a #3,000 winch you should be capable of a #6000 snatch (or #7,000 with a #3,500 winch).  That is absolutely maxing out the capability/amp draw on your #3,000 winch not to mention the battery on your truck.  4-door Trackers run right at #4,000s so in theory you would be capable of winching 1.5 times your truck's weight.  Providing the cable/line on your #3,000 pound winch is rated for #6,000 pound pulls.

So a #3,000 winch is better than none and should work for most applications except mud sticks.  If you buried your beast in mud... with the suction factor mud has you might be challenged to pull it out with even an #8,000 winch... if you can't break the suction bond.

The type motor winding on your winch (permanent magnet cheaper - series wound better) and gear ratio of the winch are big limiting factors as well because of how fast they heat up and ease of failure.

That said, when you do get stuck out in the sticks, it isn't always an exact science.  You don't always know and can't always calculate EXACTLY what the resistance forces are so it turns into more of "if a little may be enough... then more is better".  Like cratering roads or blowing timbers.  There is a general formula for each application, but it never hurts to add an extra pound of explosive to it to make sure you have enough kick to finish the job.

WARN makes a #4,000 UTV winch that would probably be a good compromise over a #3,000 one.  Bigger is usually always better because it provides you more options.  That's why winch companys generally recommend you buy a winch capable of at least 1.5 times the pull of you vehicle weight... so a #6,000 pound winch in the case of the Trackers/GVs.  For me, I'd be comfortable with a #4,000 receiver mounted winch.  You can mount it on either end of the truck or throw it in the garage when you didn't need it.   If I totally bought into the "bigger is better" theory, I wouldn't have bought all the Trackers and Sidekicks.  I would own a Hummer or something.
