getting a 93 tracker

hey everybody. my mother recently purchased a 93 tracker. well after she got it, i found intersting things on the internet and how capable they are, and have developed a liking for em. well think i found one for me. its 93 tracker lsi 5spd 4x4. i have been lookin at it for weeks, but just didnt have it in me to give up my rat rod cutlass, till i realized it just aint gonna cut it anymore,no heat almost blown tranny, half blown motor, so i decide its time to look at it. so i did. drove it checked it. the people wanted 1200, then 1000. well its got a bad power steering line, no rear seat, a check engine light, and 182000 on the clock. so i said ill give 800. im just waitin on a call back. but i think its gonna be a go. so just sayin im new, and when i get thisthing ill probably frequently on here.  never thoought id be so ampedup for such a little vehicle, ive always been into big cars and big trucks. nnever thought, i could get off road capability and alittle economy.

They're great vehicles, but repairing a high mileage model might be more $$$ and time than it's worth. Don't forget to do a therough check (look for water in the oil and visa versa), check compression etc. If it seems solid enough, and only needs a couple hundred bucks in misc stuff, fluid changes and the like (change ALL fluids: diff, transfer case, coolant, break...) then $800 is a good buy. If you've got a worn out engine (low compression) then you could be in for more than you barganed for. Hopefully things are good, and we can welcome you to the addiction shortly - good luck!   ;D

its actually from a mom and shop in town with a decent reputation. it appears to have fresh fluids, and all that, it has a fresh exhaust on it, my mothers has 138xxx on it and the one im gettin almost seems stronger. i really just want it to drive back and forth to work for the most part right now, with potentioal to build off it. i know higher milage vehicles can somtimes be troublesome, this one seems fairly well maintained. its what i can afford right now. and if i can make it last 6 months or a little longer to get either my other truck finished up or my girl friends 84 grand prix done(not sure which one we are gonna get rid of yet, to many projects gettin overwhelmed). if it lasts me that long,then i will probably dig into it and eitherrebuild the drive train or replace it, i really want to swap a 4.3 vortec in it eventually. so yeah it will need to be realiable for a whileat least and i think its up to it.

The bad power steering line is easy enough to replace, the rear seal is the only real pain.

The Check Engine light might be as simple as flipping the switch that usually hides behind the speaker on the drivers side, or somewhere under the dash.  :)

Is it a 4-door or 2-door? Might want to consider staying suzuki when you do an engine swap. Aluminum block & head = light weight. The REAL advantage suzuki's have is how light they are. The 4.3L weight 4-5x what the 1.6L does. The 2.0L (4-banger) will give you about 35% more HP & torque, the V6 will give about 60% more HP & torque (as well as have much more torque much earlier in RPM). That said, the 4.3L is super duper for mud or straight hill-climbs... really depends on the type of wheeling you plan on doing.

the whole swap thing, is just one of those things that pops in my head when looking at vehicles, you know those outrageous things that just seem crazy and make you think yeah thats what i want. reality is you are probably right, havent reasearched that much more than finding  engines on ebay. itisa 2 door with the removable hard top. i dont think it has a bad rear main seal so i aint gotta worry bout that, it wasnt leaking anything but a few drops of seering fluid. i read somewheres about that switch,i wasnt gonna tell the seller bout that though, for negotioational purposes.

Smart move. You might want to ask them how long its been on, I believe that its tripped at 180,000.

I know more than I should about engine swaps because I TOO did just what you're doing - 'how can I make moer power' and many hours drooling at other engines with more power. I started out with a $300 Samurai 8 years ago... now I'm fully immersed in the addiction. IMHO, the best thing to do is some exhaust / intake "bolt on" style upgrades & leave it at that. I could dump a bunch of money & time into an engine swap, or I could sell my rig, and use the 'engine swap' budget to buy a newer (and likely lower mileage) generation Suzuki. I'm pretty happy with my 4-door for now. My next build will probably be a 2nd Gen Tracker (1999+) with a V6, 35/37" tires, custom long-travel IFS front suspension & 4-link rear. But, that's going to take years of saving the $$$ - meanwhile 2nd gen kicks will come down in price  ;D

Problem is, I plan to wheel in ALL conditions (snow, ice, mud, sand dunes, Rubicon) in one vehicle - so it's going to take $$$.

thanks for that little peice of info on the check engine light, if thats the caseit shouldnt have been on that long givin the 182xxx. its actually for sale by a private seller on there lot,and apparentlyhe hasnt calledthem back still, so im gonna have to jump on there case alittle on monday, cause i need to get this thing asap, hopefully before the next snow storm here in ct. thanks again. hey not change the subject but,my mothers has a hard time starting somtime warm and cold, if she mats the gas (its efi so that dont make sense) it will start but run rough for a few then perfectly, but somtimes it takes a few tries. anyoneknow what might cause this?

Full throttle during cranking will usually cause an ECU to kill injection known as 'flood clear'. It sounds like it could do with a tune up with new plugs and wires.

i paid for the geo in full tonight, pick it up on wensday when its registered. im one happy dude right now, i havent had vehicle with heat or working windows in like a year and a half so i cant wait till wensday. sad day for the cutlass, good day for the geo. thank you guys ill be on here for sure now more.
