Changing my first sami timing belt
« on: December 08, 2008, 02:26:19 PM »
Hey guys I need to change my timing belt on an 88 sami. I have the FSM but one thing Im unclear about is should the motor be on #1TDC or #4? I have done them before on #1 but it seems like the book is saying #4.

Also, the book says to unlash all your rockers, but I think that is just incase you need to spin the cam to line it up like on a new motor right? If I just pull a belt off and put one on I wouldn't need to do that, correct?

Thanks for the help!

Just make sure you know what cylinder is TDC, and mark lots of stuff (cam, lower pulley, etc) in case something gets bumped & rotates. Most instructions say to go to #1 TDC, because most manuals have instructions on how to get everything lined up again off #1 TDC (in case something gets drastically out of wack). Some people suggest to use lock-tite when re-installing crank pulley to help avoid the dreaded keyway damage.

Just line your timming marks up and you will be good. I did mine just like I do at work. Now when you pull the dist that's another thing
