96 Tracker - Calamini Headers and strut problem
« on: October 18, 2008, 02:20:41 AM »
I pulled a good one yesterday! Went through a creek and the exhaust manifold decided to give up. Two cracks in it. >:( I've been looking for a header and came across the Calamini header that appears to be a simple bolt on application. A little hard on the pocket book though.

Has anyone bought this header and does it bolt up to the exhaust as they say? Just put new pipe, high flow cat, and a performance muffler on from the manifold to the rear about six months ago and I don't want to cut the pipe up if I don't have too! ;)

I've put two sets of OEM struts from Autozone on my Tracker in 1 year. The first set started making noise in about 4 months and now the newer ones are doing the same thing. Almost sounds like they are rubbing on the inside of the strut. I did notice that there is only about a 1/16 inch of the threads coming up though the top bolt after tightening them. Seems like the originals had more thread coming through the bolt? Maybe Autozone is giving me the wrong strut? I've done nothing except put a 2 inch body lift and 235 tires with 2.5 inch BS rims on the vehicle. Don't see where anything I've done would make the struts give up so quickly. Do you know where I can get a good set of OEM struts that won't give me these problems and if you do what kind are they and if you have a strut number it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I have the Stainless Steel header from Calmini And i love it.  Big Diffrence in the way my tracker responded. I took it to my local muffler man and they installed it, said it was one of the best headers they have installed.

The problem you are having with your struts is the fact of where you bought them. Plain and simple.

When I was in St. George, Utah this last year I did some side work for some of the local shops. They absolutely refused to buy parts from them as they would have to replace the same parts within just a few short months becase they were just cheap junk. You would be better off getting your money back and buy some from a NAPA store or somewhere like that with a better quality product.

Kubik, What year model of Tracker do you have? One thing that I noticed when looking at these headers from Calamini, is that it say 8 valve or 16 valve but it does not have anything about year or model. I find that strange because I saw where I can get a OEM exhaust manifold for a 95 tracker 16 valve. Makes me wonder if the bolt pattern and the fit would be the same? It would save me some $$$$ if I just bought the 95 exhaust manifold,.....if it fits.

My .02 about the Calmini Headers.  I have the 8v set, and they're great!  Real easy to put on, looks and sounds awesome.  Mine have some surface rust on them.    :'(   But I figure because of all the water I get under there when wheeling.  I've had em for a few months now,  and no problems whatsoever.

I have a 96 GEO and I have the Calimini header.  I've had it for about 6 years.  Goes on easy and bolts right onto the converter.

Sounds great and runs better.

The 8V you have to mod the exhaust slightly, the 16V is a bolt on.

How do you have to mod it? I don't remember altering mine at all.  As I recall, it went on quite easily considering my low level of mechanical knowledge.

I have gone through 2 sets of Monroe struts on the front of my truck. I just don't think that they are made to take the off road abuse on a regular basis. These were the cheap line of Monroe's I might add. I have a new set of Napa premium struts for a Dodge Colt wagon (longer) but have not got around to cutting the buckets off. I am running KYB shocks in the rear of my vehicle and have been very happy with them so far. As with anything else you get what you pay for.

I was wondering if anyone had put a set of these on yet, as I remember it being mentioned a while ago.  What do you mean by having to cut the buckets off?

The struts are "Mcpherson Struts" meaning that they are made to hold the spring.
