Wiring Woes!
« on: September 12, 2008, 03:01:52 PM »
Hi Guys.  I've been reading your forums a lot, but never posted or replied.  I've owned a'94 Tracker for about two years and just purchased a '88 Sammy w/fiberglass tops.  My question has to do with really trashed wiring on the Sammy.  It has a Holley carb and most of the engine compartment wiring is hacked up.  Does anyone have new original harnesses for sale, or does anyone make custom harnesses based on modifications done?

Thanx a lot.  Hope to get the Sammy running soon.

i have a 88 sammi that had really bad hacked wiring i got a harness from a 91 sammi it all pluged in just had a couple extra connectors on the harness and i had to remove one fuse because the lights were constantly on. i also ended up bypassing the stock headlight harness because they were very hacked and i just ran a relay for both headlights and used a push/pull switch.

by the way its very easy to change the harness i pulled the whole dash because its only a couple of screws and bolts. it took me a hour to do the the whole swap including putting a different dash turn signal mechanism.

The Holley carb is probably a Weber 32/36 lookalike.

This means that the Previous Owner (PO) removed all the unnecessary carburetor electrical connections as a part of the conversion.  I have such a Samurai and am getting 25 MPG with it on a fresh engine.  This carburetor does not need the electrical sensors or the Engine Control Module (ECM) to funtion properly.

If you are having problems getting it to run, you may be having vacuum leak problems caused by the PO's attempts to seal off the unused vacuum ports on the intake manifold.  They should all be thoroughly sealed off and the vaccuum advance for the carburetor should be coming off a vacuum port near the base of the Holly/Weber carburetor.  If the vacuum ports are properly sealed, you may have either jetting problems or engine cylinder compression problems that would make any carburetor not work very well.

If you are trying to make it through an inspection or just want to put it all back to stock, you will need a new engine harness and an EOM Hitachi carburetor to do the job.

At this point, we need more information on your truck and what you are trying to accomplish and at what cost.

It may be better to try to make the Holly/Weber work than to try to restore the intake and electrics to OEM specs.

Finally, you have a great resource for parts nearby!

Hey Guys, thanx for the replies.  I don't need to do a test, and it runs very well.  What I really want to do is make a very reliable driver, that is very trail and hunting worthy.  I have no front turn signals, indicator lights on the dash, and the engine compartment is a disaster.  I've wired a couple of dune buggies with Painless wiring systems, I was wondering if there might be an easier way and stay closer to the factory systems.  At this time I know that I have no frt signals, fuel indicator, temp, 4x4 indicator, or dash lights.  At least that is what I have found so far.

My tag name is Happy Tracker.  When I got the Tracker I loved it, but I've wanted a Sammy since the day they came out.  I just really want to do it right and make it into something that will be a tribute to the Samurai Clan.

Thanx again, Happy Tracker

wow sounds like my sammi when i got it  ;D
do u still have the front turn signal lights or are they missing?
mine were missing due to the aftermarket bumper so i had to fab ones and wire them in with the existing harness
I have had the same cluster problem and i replaced the cluster 3 times and thats why i think i have a small short or just really bad luck it. they work then slowly everything starts to stop working.
im in the process of making a custom cluster everything new speedo fuel level coolant level even setting up the indicator lights for the brake 4wd turn signals.
for a fsm ( factory service manual ) go on to www.suzukiinfo.com and download the whole manual. you can print it or like me i have a pda phone that supports pdf files so i just use that when im working on the sammi.  it gives you everything oh also its free too

i am also a newbie

If your stock lights are there and your wiring is all plugged in, it is usually a bad groung. I had to run a dedicated ground to the base of each reflecter to get mine to work! Hope this helps.
