engine relays clicking
« on: January 17, 2008, 06:33:50 PM »
Hello, I have a 1991 sidekick with the EFI 1.6,    When i turn on the key the main relay, fuel pump relay and other emission relay's start clicking, motor turns over but will not start, checked plugs, no spark, I read in another post that this happens when there is a fault in the ECU, but it contained no further details on how to repair,

Most people swap out the ECM for another one.

go to http://bbs.zuwharrie.com and pm Surly (do a search for ECM to find a post of his) with your problem.  Indicate the year and model.

He has been known to rebuild ECMs for a reasonable price.

You may have a short somewhere. Try disconnecting the sensors one by one to try and isolate the fault.

Do the relays continually click when you are trying to start it?  Or do they just click once when you turn the key on, then if you wait about 3 seconds (without trying to start it), they will click once more?

Could be a bad ground, could be a bad relay (or two).

as soon as you turn on the key they start,, its probably a short , they take turns chattering after checking different items and trying the key , it looks ugly , im tyring to locate a print online, i also found an ald unused car alarm under the dash, what a scabed job.

ECU wiring diagram is here:

The Black/Blue wire is the 12V feed to the solenoids and stuff. Are you sure that the replacement ECU is good?

My first guess would be a bad ground, that is the usual sympton

Sounds like either bad relays or a bad ground.

I can, the symptoms that you have indicate that there is a problem with the 12V injector power circuit or the switched 12V supply (black/blue). This may be a problem internal to the ECU, usually caused by bad capacitors. The relay chatter is caused the by the ECU continuously resetting itself. It does this when it detects a major fault. It could still be a short or a bad contact in the connector but its usually the ECU.
