stripped air box screws

stripped air box screws

 I just bought my tracker and all of the air box screws are stripped out bad. Does anyone have a good fix ?   I'm thinking about drilling the heads off and trying to get to the remaining studs with vice grips.

I have a tool for just that scenero, it's call Gripit. They are bits that fit into a drill/screw gun, one end burnishes the stripped head, you flip the bit over, and the other end removes the stripped bolt, screw, etc. in reverse.  Drilliing the head off is the next best option I think. I would then soak the remaining threads with PB Blaster, kroil, or another penetrant before trying to remove the remainder.

i picked up a set of internal easy outs from napa a few months ago. they have saved me alot of time. i think they have paid for themselves a few times already. they grab the outside of the bolt instead of having to drill a hole. they have worked every time so far. the whole set cost me 80 but they were like 20 each if you were to buy them seperatly.

 Thanks. The "screwout" tool did not work as planned. I will drill the heads off or try to use an easy out over the weekend.

If you have a wire welder just set a nut over each screw and burn a weld into the center of the nut, then you can put vice grips on them and twist them out.

Be careful drilling the heads, they can get very hot and melt the plastic.

did u try takeing a bigger phillups and pounding it into the head thats how i got mine open

Yea, was a big problem for me too.  I drilled out the heads but ruined the case.  Had to clamp the case till I replaced the whole air cleaner box.
