front brake dust shields.

Do you guy's remove the front brake dust shields or do you run with them ? Is there any advantage to running with or without them ?Better with better without?The reason I ask is I'm doing the front wheel bearing and my driverside dust shield is pretty much crap.I'm going to put it back together without and I will replace later unless it's good to go without then I will remove the otherside when I get there.

Im not sure what rig you have, but i have a sami with yota axles.  For you can remove the dust sheild...kind of.  The sheild or backing plate on a yota is needed for propper spacing of everything,  So most people just cut off everything and keep the inner ring.  So that there spacing is all kept the same.  As i said befor, i dont know what car you have, everything above is the same for a sammi as a yota i do belive.  Not sure for a tracker or sidekick

I leave mine on for the hope that they will actually try to help keep the mud out of there.  I've thought about removing them, but couldn't see any advantage to taking them off.

When I went through the front on my Sammy I decided to leave the shields off. Basically just so the look of the front axle would match the new hybrid rear with disks. And as was mentioned, if you remove them you need to use a spacer in it's place. I got redneck on the spacer and used flat washers the same thickness as the spacer.

Mines a tracker and there are 4 bolts that hold it on it' just a tin thing maybe 20 gauge I don't think or see where I would need spacers!...??

I took them off lil Suzy years ago for the same reason that crikeymike is leaving his on. Mud kept getting packed in behind them. I have not noticed any difference in braking and my chrome wheels don't get covered in brake dust so it must be doing something right.

I would think that they would run cooler also .But I wonder about sticks or grasses getting wound around the hub area and taking out the rear seal .Maybe there should be a very small sheild that fits around the hub area but then the mud would collect in there.....hmmm...

I haven't had that problem but then I stay on the trails when I wheel.

I think the main reasons for taking them off are...They get packed with mud and debris, and when wheelin on rocks, they get bent into the rotor and make good a amount of noise.

Yankee Bob and I very recently did full restorations of our front axles (POR15, stainless hardware, etc).  We used a plasma cutter and cut off the dust shield down to the spindle flange.  This gave us the look we desidered.  Since I installed blue painted 4dr Kick calipers, and gold zinc'd drilled Brembo rotors, I wanted good looks, and as mentioned above, stop getting mud, rocks and snow/ice buildup beind the rotor.  Making the backing plate look like this kept the caliper properly spaced, and kept the part that keeps crap out of the hub bearing.

I'll post up some pics, but it looks great (along with the S/S hoses, and blue wiper seal rings)
