http://Car-Part.com makes a great parts interchange guide. just look at the part you want then click years at the top of the listing, all the years that fit will be listed in order.

I got the info I posted by going to Car-Part and looking up the gear ratios, Car-Part uses a dismantlers interchange program so I expect the information is accurate.

Yes I think that's a correct list because I can personally verify the first 7 on the list, having had the gears in my hands at one time or another over the years.

I can verify the whole list is accurate, because I have personally seen, had, or pulled every ratio, and every combo, on the list, except for the 89 1.3L 5.625s (but I know that one is correct).

Here is a list.....it is simply designed to tell you what ratio you have based on year, body, engine, and tranny.

89-98 Trackick gear ratios

Year   2 or 4 door  Engine type   Transmission   Axle ratio
89        2              1.3L carb.       5 speed man.   5.625
89-95   2              1.6L TBI         5 speed man.   5.125
89-95   2              1.6L TBI         3 speed auto   4.625
91        4              1.6L TBI         5 speed man.   5.375
92-98   4              1.6L MPFI       5 speed man.   5.125
92-98   4              1.6L MPFI       3 speed auto   4.30
92-98   4              1.6L MPFI       4 speed auto   5.125
94-98   2              1.6L MPFI       5 speed man.   5.125
94-98   2              1.6L MPFI       3 speed auto   4.30
94-98   2              1.6L MPFI       4 speed auto   5.125
96-98   X90          1.6L MPFI       auto or man.   4.625

4.625 gears have an 8/37 tooth count
4.30 gears have a 10/43 tooth count
5.125 gears have an 8/41 tooth count
5.375 gears have an 8/43 tooth count
5.625 gears have an 8/45 tooth count

I agree that list is accurate, but missing one ...

91        4              1.6L TBI        3 speed auto   4.625

I am waiting to hear back on that one.  I just recently found someone that actually has a 91 4 door with an auto (until now, I though all 91, 4 doors had manual trannys).  I think the 91, 4 door, with auto will have 5.375s (5.38s), like the 5 speed.
Or are you 100% positive that a 91, 4 door, 1.6L TBI, 3 speed auto will have 4.625s?

I own one, it's my parts rig. ... it certainly doesn't have 5.38's

Ok.  Good to know.
So you have dropped out a third and verified that it has 4.625s (8 and 37 tooth count)?

dropped the front third and sold it off as a 4.62 ... no complaint from the customer.

when the weather gets nicer here, I'll go rotate the rear and take a count.

it's 4.62 tho I'm 99% certain ... I drove it and can kinda "tell".

5.38s ONLY came in the 91, 4 doors, with a 5 speed......all 91 4 doors came with the 8V engine.

If we are using carparts.com as the basis of this search. Then 5:38's came in 1989, 1990, and 1991 suzuki sidekick models. My personal references for my information are from Petroworks, Trail Tough, and Rancho recyclers. I have had to purchase more than just one of them before. I stand by my previous comment of the 5:38 gears offered for more than one year. :P

I am not using carparts.com as a basic for my info.  I am using real world, personally verified information.
I will also stand by my previous comment that you will only find 5.38 gears in 91, 4 doors with the 8V engine and a 5 speed manual tranny. ;)
If they came in 89 and 90 sidekicks......what body style and drivetrain set up did they come in?

In looking at Car-Part it does look like the majority of 5.38 are coming out of 91 4doors. There are listings for 5.38's from other year kicks and it could be that those vehicles were modified or the part is incorrectly labeled I don't know for sure. We can be sure that they can be found in 91 5sp 4 doors.

According to petroworks I beleive the early 1.3l equipped kicks may have had them.
