2.5 v6 motor swap

motor in 2002 gr vit with 320000kms (200000miles) just went to a better place. Will a 2.5 v6 out of a 2003 tracker work in the 2002 gr vit? I have heard many yes's and no's from different auto wreckers and mechanics over the past few days.  My suzuki dealer thinks so but won't confirm. Any thoughts?

Just checked the Parts catalogue, and the only Engine section differences between 02 and 03 are the cruise control and the fuel pump.  The mounts are the same.

However, the ECMs are different, and so are the crank angle sensors.  There are some different wiring harnesses, but these are identified by VIN, not model year.

In the Emission Control section (where all the sensors are), there is one difference - the air cut-off valve and securing bolt are different.  Whether they matter as regards the ECM ????  Maybe use your old one.


I'd say you'd be fine if you keep the 02 cruise (if you have it), and maybe you might need to swap the crank angle sensors (but I'd be surprised).  Keep your harness and ECM.

 I found the gr vit motor to be $1200-1800 with 80-100000 miles. The 2003 tracker motor is $700 with only 8000 miles on it. I figured they were the same and for the dif in price. I couldn't pass on this deal. Just needed some more info. Thanks.

finally finished the swap. Thanks for the basics on what to look for IanL. Took about 17hrs over the past weekend and week. No major hassles just allot of wishing there was more space available. Found out what happened to the motor. On the timing chain guide there are a couple of 10 mil bolts that hold it in place. One of the bolts backed its way out. The bolt proceeded to make its way through the motor damaging as it went. The bolt finally lodged itself under the cam.
The good thing is the new motor with 8000 miles on it works nice. There is one question I have now. I had to remove the rad. When I disconnected the tranny lines, the tranny fluid was black. I just changed the tranny fluid about 6 months ago. Anyone have any ideas why it would turn dark so fast? It was not like a burnt orange or red. It was more like a dirty oil colour.

   My 91 did that and it was a bad seal where the transfer case bolts to the tranny.I just unbolted the transfer case from the tranny replaced the seal and changed fluids in both.
  I don't know if that applies to your car but it is a possibility.
