difference between 4.62 5.12 REAR diffs visually?
« on: November 10, 2004, 03:01:09 AM »
Hi all,

how can a person tell visually the difference between a 4.62 and a 5.12 REAR differential, as well as a 12 bolt versus a 10 bolt?

This would be with the differential not on the truck, but sitting in front of them on a bench.

Thanks

the only way i know how to do it is to mark the teeth and count them.  then divide the ring gear by the pinion.  and i think 10 bolt and 12 bolts are just how many bolts hold the ring gear to the carrier.  HTH  ;)

You should be able to mark the rin and pinion gears, set the teeth together and roll the pinion gear one full revolution og the ring, counting how many turns it takes  :-/ Just a guess but I prety sure it would work.

Tried this.. came up with 39 on the ring gear and 8 on the pinion. Then that added up to 4.875, is that correct?

seems off... but could they possibly be 4.88's? did they have 4.88's overseas in the newer vits?

Well, a litle under 5 could be the 4.xx and a little over 5.xx ??? I think the tooth count would be closer, but I've never done it :P

Here's the deal. Using Calmini's website and the picture of the 5.83's as a reference, I did the tooth calculation there. 6 teeth on the pinion, 35 on the ring gear when devided, equals 5.83 :)

So, the 4.875 is correct. GRVIT has some 4.88 gears that came stock in his 2001 Vitara with a Manual, overseas.  ;)

I envy him because his 2001 is still the old body style!  >:(

I have a 12 bolt 5.12 on the work bench at home.  I'll count the ring and pinion teeth tonight and let you know.

The number of bolts, 10 vs 12, are the ring gear mounting bolts.

so can you install a 10 bolt rear into a housing that came with a 12 bolt? I am pretty sure you can.

I think I have...

:P

The only difference is that the most of the 12 bolts had ABS. But who needs it?

Yea you can ;) I had to have it for the 5.83's in my Kick. The carrier came out of an non-abs 97 2wd tracker.

On the bottom of my 3rd member
it has painted  YOE A
and on another I saw YOE M

???

So what does all this mean ?
a YOE is a truck in Japaneese
and A is for Automatic, M for
Manual Trans

So in a pinch you might be able
to ID a diff, but if it were out it
should just be counting teeth

ON a side note I found a Kick
with about 3.5 Revs of the DS
to one rev of the wheel ???

I din't know there were 3.5:1
gears anywhere, unless sombody
put a set of Sammie gears in there

For a 5.12

Ring gear - 41 teeth

Pinion gear - 8 teeth
