Power Steering
« on: November 12, 2004, 12:12:50 AM »
I am looking for information on Powersteering systems.  my arms are getting tired, and I am going up to 33" Super Swamper TSL radials.

What I am looking for is opinions on the toyota (78-81 Celica) and the Tracker systems.  Performance and installation.  I know there are kits out there for adding these on, but I want to know how much fab work it takes to mount the steering box and pump for each.  I kinda want to keep cost down on this.

Any info would be appreciated.

PS.  I am in the market for one of those systems.

Shoyrtt has been looking for the
Power Steering Box for a while, I
have been too, since he had me
doing some of his mod work, and
I'll tell you, they are as scarce as
hens teeth, I mean I couldn't find
one, and all, I mean not just the
Celica, but all the other models that
Toyota put this box into were stripped
out, like they were harvested by

RRO  has the conversion kit brackets
and instructions, you still need to find
an A/C pully for a Sammy and get the
pump and the box and match a belt to
fit the pully.

I think it would be a worthwhile mod,
but the hoops you have to jump thru,
don't tear it apart until you find all of
your parts, it could take some time

I run a 'yota IFS setup from an '88 p/u. Works great, just gotta get a cooler on it as it pukes a bit when really working it in rocks for a while. I modified the stock toy pump mount to fit the 1.3. For the two groove crank pulley I cut and welded on a water pump pulley to the stock one groove crank pulley.
For the box mount to the frame I welded a 1/4" plate to the outside and sleeved the new bolt holes inside the frame. So far so good, and I am welded front and rear. You will need to modify the left front body mount a bit, though. To remedy this I am going to go to a tiy FJ-60 box as the pitnman arm is forward facing and will allow me to clear my new Sky crossover setup and not have the IFS box mounted near the end of the frame rail. Here's a couple pics of my friend Glenn's old sammy setup, I basically copied this
