Gas Tank problem
« on: October 22, 2007, 01:50:36 AM »
hi there,
1st post from me, I have a Grand Vitara 1.6 3d, model 2005 with OME susp, body lift and 205/80/16 wheels.

Last WKD I hit my gas skid plate, the power of hit was good enough to penetrate the skid and damage the fuel tank.

The result is :
gas tank with a huge punch on it
skid plate damaged
gas indicator out of order

I have read some topics from this forum where u ppl managed to upper the gas tank, my model is diff from yours and I would like to know if I can upper my tank too!

Thank's in advance for your assistance!

there are 2 cross beams over the tank on the frame that would need to be cut and remounted to lift the tank.  my tank is in bad condition also because the skid plate is like tin foil, no tank skids are available either.  good luck.

thank you for the answer! i will have a look, although i can't get the picture in my mind.
A cheap solution is to strengthen the existing skid by installing a 4cm tailor made plate.

how higher the gas tank will be after the home made solution?

nope. Either I'm not wheeling hard enough or I have more groud clearance they you guys.  I'm going with ground clearance  ::)  I did send them an email we'll see what I get back.

i've never measured how much clearance i have under the tank or frame with all the adjustments i've made to things this season.  i should check..  the tank skid is not the only dented/bent part of the bottom of the tracker.

ground clearance really wont matter with the tank... its behind the axle so even if you had 20 inches of clearance if your dropping down from a steep incline the back axle will fall and the gas tank can still hit... the front the worse that would really happen is you would get hung up on the bumper... the rear you would hang up on the tank before you reached the bumper... a good skid plate would help

i would have to say ground clearance is a big issue with the gas tank,  the more tank clearance the less hitting.  2 more inches of tank clearance from a tank lift if it weren't so much work would have saved me from hitting more than once.

i did this too.  i lifted my gas tank in my 4door 04 3.5" and it made a huge difference.  the tank on these sits very low.  when i hit my tank (on a rock and dirt bank of a ditch) it also bent my exhaust making it rub on the drive shaft.  so i also cut the tail pipe shorter and added a chrome down angle tip.  yes it is a pain in the butt to raise the tank!!.  you have to raise a breather box on the driver side, cut the 2 cross braces off, and cut and modify an aluminium return breather hose.

but, i am so glad i did it.  i did a 3" body lift first.  i dont know how much you can lift the tank without a body lift.  maybe 1" which would not be worth the trouble.

my 2c........ :P

did you re-weld the braces over the tank with new brackets or just leave them off?

I just left them out.  This probably voids every warranty on earth and might even be illegal.  but i figure the gen 1 trackicks dont have them...  i am sure its a rear crash test thing, who needs safety...  no really, if i could have rewelded the brackets i would have, it would be a good idea. ;)

fair enough.  is it because fabbing up some new mounts wasn't worth it or did it look like it just would not have worked?

both, i dont mind some fabing if it doesnt go way to far out of the way.  to get the benifit of the braces in a rear crash (what i think they are for) would have taken ALOT of work.  with all the other steel i added when i built my own rear winch bumper i think i am safe enough as is. :P
