I have a 1992 Sidekick, 4 door JX model.  I love it. it only has 130,000 miles on it with little rust. (surprisingly for the age )  Here is my dilema.  I have a chance to buy a 2000 Chevy tracker with 85,000 miles on it and a blown engine for $1500.  I found an engine for $800.  So I should have about $2500 in a 2000 tracker when all is said & done.  Should I go for it or be happy with what I got for now?   A 2.0  engine has more power than my 1.6 16 valve, but are there any other advantages to the tracker? Do they work as well off road?  I noticed that there are no "hubs" to lock or unlock, how reliable is the new system? All your thoughts will be welcome.

your old tracker I think is a more capable off roader than the 2000. there is more lift choices for the '92 and the 2000 use rack and pinion steering which is good for road driving but makes it hard to lift for offroad.

I say keep both and turn the '92 into a dedicated off roader! 

if i were to lose my 2003 tracker somehow, i would replace it with the 1st gen model simply for the availability of parts to fit on them for wheeling.  if you like the one you have and know it's dependable hang on to it.

That 2.0 is a pile. The timming chains keep poping on these and they are zero tolerance motor. The 16 valve has proven to be a better motor. If I had a 2.0 I would change the chain and tensioner every 70k. Ive seen several with less than 100k on them with the chain busted.

  Now wait a minute, If it's got a timing chain and tensioner that need replaced every 70 k, what is the point of it being a chain? We had a 99 Nissan quest (Mercury Villager ?) that only required it's timing belt to be changed at 105 k intervals due to its rounded teeth instead of squared off teeth in the belt design. I've got a real problem with a motor that has that kind of maintenance issue and I don't care how powerful it is!!! That's not worth it!!
