busted a crown vic rear shock into 2 pieces..

sooo, went for a run on the weekend, not sure when this shock broke in half but it snapped just above the lower mount, i don't have a pic, sorry...   to replace the crown vic shocks i compared the 98 f150 shock, mustang and crown vic.  the f150 seemed huge, so not even gonna try it, the mustang shock is about 1.5 inches longer, perfect mount points, so they're going in today.  i'll let everybody know how this goes...!  and...  i had the xl7 coils with a 1/2 in spacer in back, i didn't like the way it sat, so a 1.75inch heep spacer is going to replace the smaller one.   the xl7 springs don't provide much lift, maybe 1.5inches but do ride better with a load.  either way, they sag, if i put a full tank of gas the rear drops 1/2inch and gear means more sag...  we'll see how this goes!

Lame dude. I tried E150 ford van shocks and they were way too harsh. But, now I'm running 1990-1995 Toyota 4-Runner shocks... they are awesome, the travel specs allow max rear wheel travel and feel a lot like stock.. the top end of the shock bolts right on, the bottom is close to exact but requires a trip to rona / home-depot for a shim (found mine no problem).

I run 99 ford f150 4x2 shocks out back and fit is just fine but I also have 3" of lift too

well i put the mustang shocks back there, fit perfect, i probably have roughly 3inches of lift in the back now with the 1.75inch spacers and xl7 coils.  the ride has changed, feels softer but also rougher..?!?!?!?  i know that sounds dumb...., i haven't driven it much or had the chance to flex it out yet.  it sits better now, i shouldn't be saggy when it's loaded up.  i'll update after i get the chance to really test it out.

94 - 04 mustang rear shock;
compressed-12.250             
extended-20.125           

looks like the 4 runner shocks are a little longer, i'll have to see how these work out, if they aren't up to the challenge i'll look to the yota shocks next.

The reson for the rougher ride is that the xl-7 rear spring rates are higher plus with spring spacers your running up the spring rate as well netting a harder ride.

Not sure if it would help, have you thought of 'Air Lift' bags.

I tow a pop-up camper, with 29" tires and only spacer's as a lift.  The tongue weight of the camper didn't leave enough room for the tires when bouncing around to a campsite.  I put the Air Lift bags in the rear springs and ran the little air line to the rear bumber.  I put 20 to 30 psi in the air bags when I hook up the camper and can then adjust it to keep the tracker level even with the tongue weight from the camper.

gave the shocks a quick flex test, not a huge difference, i guess they droop however much longer they are and that's that!  the ride can be a little harsh but nothing i can't live with right now.  since i still haven't really done a rough trail with these things on i dunno yet how bouncy it will be.  the brake lines don't seem to have anymore stress on them than before.

hey bzzr2,
what brand and part number mustang shocks are you using??

I looked at the specs you posted in this thread for the shocks your running now and that looks like it would be good for my lift but the only specs i found for 98 mustang shocks was:

Napa responce brand and Sensa-track brand

Upper Mount:Stem 3/8" x 16
Lower Mount:Loop Type 12MM x 1 1/2"
Compressed Length:14.500"
Extended length:19.125"
Travel Length:4.625"

I was gonna use 4 runner shocks but i think they might be to much shock for a 2in lift...dont wanna over extend the springs!

Bzzr2;  Do you have a two door or four door truck?  You mentioned you put XL7 springs n the rear of your truck and gained maybe one and half inches... did you put the XL7 springs in the front also?  If so how much lift did you gain in the front.  I have a four door with a 2Ltr and was wondering about putting XL7 springs in the rear and front OR getting a pair of front coils from the front of a truck with a V6 in it for the front springs.  I'm pretty sure the springs from a V6 aren't any longer, but I believe I read somewhere the V6 coils are thicker and would provide more lift (mayber an inch or so).  I'm sold on the quality of the Suzuki factory equipment, so I figured using the springs from a V6 equipped truck in the front and XL7 springs in the rear would provide the additional spring lift I'd like to obtain without the cost of OME springs.

mine's a 2dr, i've only got the xl7 coils in the rear, as for the fronts i believe beercheck put the xl7's up front on his 2ltr 2dr and they did provide lift, he'd have to elaborate on that though as i cannot.  my fronts are stock with coil spacers, they are sagging and i'll probably buy some OME's for the front just because i can't afford to have my dd apart a bunch of times if the ride height is not good with v6 or xl7 coils.  if you look up the OME's the gv springs are longer but again i can't say for stock.  also, with the xl7 coils i added i have no idea what kind of abuse they had taken or what mileage was on them, the truck i got them from had nothing left of the front end.  anyway, i hear the v6 coils should give us one roughly one inch of front lift.

i'm not sure what the part number of the mustang shocks i'm using are.  i just went into a parts store ans asked for rear shocks for a 95 mustang took one out and compared it to one of my crown vics, compressed size was the same but extended it was 1.5 to 2inches longer.  i bought the cheapest ones i could to try out and so far so good, a little stiffer but they are what they are.  when you go into a shop just compare them to some crown vics.

What kind of bumpstop extensions are you running?  If none, then the shock becomes the stop.  Maybe that is why the past shock broke?  But with you now using a 1.75" spacer, the spring may completely compress first, making that the stop, which will make the spring lose height from overcompression.

no bumpstop extensions...  i know, it's not the best setup.. the shock doesn't seem to over compress and act as the stop, the springs are probably doing the stopping on full compression.  i was contemplating simply adding a rubber block inside the bottom of the spring on the axle to act as a stop, the problem is there is so much frigging snow every 2nd day in ottawa that everything is a mess and i won't be getting under there any time soon.  not really doing any wheeling at this time of year so it can wait until next year now.  i get the feeling my shock cracked when i had to get winched sideways when wedged between two stumps, it broke a couple hours after that happened.
