My Samurai 2002 is a Turtle!!
« on: September 10, 2007, 08:58:08 PM »
Need some input.......I bought a Samurai 2002 Long. Its got a Renault 1.9 Diesel motor and while I have heard Diesel car run a little slower something just feels wrong.
Maximum speed for my Samurai is 100 Km/h!!!........5th gear, 3000 Rpm. Downhills if I am lucky
pushes the car up to 105 Km/h.
Is this really normal for a 1.9 cc Diesel motor? Please help.

are you running stock size tires? have the axle gears been changed? 100 km/h would be like 60 mph i think. which is not too far off if your running big tires, deisel or not.
if you have big tires then you can probably gain some wheel speed if you change axel gears.
good luck

Thank you for your reply. I think it is stock size tires, could be a hair bigger but they are not big. I dont know exactly what axle gears mean but I dont know much about the cars history. Yesterday when driving another Samurai just like mine just came flying by. It was a little uphills which make my Samurai really a Turtle. It got me figuring something just is not right.

Does it have any problems crawling through the gears, or does it just run out of steam around 3000 rpm?

It doesnt have any problems crawling through the gear. It is more like you say, it runs out of steam around 3000 rpm.
Any ideas?

Do you know what car the engine was lifted from?  The only stats I can find on a Renault Diesel was from a Renault 21.

1.9 L (1870 cc) diesel 8-valve I4; 65 bhp (48 kW); top speed: 160 km/h; 0-100 km/h: 16.0 s

There was also a Turbo version of the engine that put out 95hp.

You might simply be under geared for the engine.  If most of your power is in the low end of RPM range you might just need to put lower gears in it so it can be running around 2K rpm's instead of 3K in 5th gear.

Do you have another car with the same engine you can use as a base test to compare against?

As far as I know the Renault 1.9L Diesel engine came stock in the kind of Samurai I have.  Dont think it was pulled from any car but I don't know for sure. The stats you got seems to be right. How big of job is it to put lower gears in it? Might sell the car if it is too much work to get it running properly.
I don't have another car to compare against.

It's not that big of a deal if you can find them.  I'm just not sure where you would get taller gears...

Any chance you can test it with bigger tires, see how those work?

I believe the the Renault engine fitted to the Samurai has a different intake and produces less power than those fitted to Renaults. Have you checked the usual stuff like the fuel filter and the valve lash?

I'm wondering if it was built simply to run out of steam around 65...  The stock 410 only went 60 stock.

You could be right because it seems like that kind of motor should produce some power. I do not know much about cars. I recently bought a new fuel filter, I dont know what valve lash is........english is not my first language.

Valve Lash is making sure the valves are adjusted properly under the valve cover.  You use a feeler gauge (flat pieces of metal in various thickness) to check the clearance of your valves when they are closed.

As for your diesel, I think it is a Santana built Samurai.

You might have some luck at http://www.suzukiclubuk.com forums.  There was another large UK SJ club, but I can't find it at the moment.
