I Need 5.83 gears!
« on: August 11, 2007, 11:53:06 AM »
I know there are a lot of people out there also looking for these gears, but.... I just broke my rear set. Now my 96 tracker is dead in the water. Does anyone have a set? Can make a set?

My only other option at this point seems to be to build a custom Ford 9" and stuff it with a detroit and 5.83s. I have to stick with the 5.83s in order to keep my Spidertrax Sidewinder front axle which is stuffed with a Sidekick rear 3rd member also equipped with 5.83s... not looking good.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

You might be thinking about the place in Turkey. There are a couple of old threads.

Your Spidey front axle, is that the D44 outters or Sammy outters?

it's 44 outers fitted with my sidekick brakes and hubs. it is an amazing setup. I'm running a 4 link with spidertrax coils and a lockright.

Cool, just wanted to know.  Going to have them make me a housing, but machined to accept the sammy knuckles and run Newfields.

What broke on it?  If you just cracked a few teeth or only lost one or two you can probably have a qualified welder fix the gear for you.

yukon gear sells 538s

I was talking to a vender on zuwharrie that sells Yukon and he told me they had nothing for the Track/Kick...I told him anything would be an improvement for running the 31's and depending on the price I would even take 5.38's. TTAM, I see you have 5.38's and run 31's, how is that working for you? Cheers

I went the Ford 9 route when my vit destroyed the Calmini 5.83 upset  I am glad I did even though I  lost my "Pure Suzuki"  status. I wouldnt trade the 9 for two Suzuki rears. You can build a ford 9 way cheaper than what Curry charges but if money is not a problem Curry does great work.

Weld a ring and pinion... Now thats the dumbest thing I have ever heard... Gee then after that we will send it out and have it machined as you would have to get it cut again... Then after it's machined it would have to be sent out for anealing and hardening process... Hardly worth all that effort to save a ring and pinion. Cost a fortune and if not more than a new 5:83 ring and pinion are worth.
Just my 2 cents.

looks like the 9" is gonna be my best bet. and like you said, can be built a million different ways, and junkyard cheap if you look hard enough. and it'll be nice to get to a real detroit instead of the lockright i've been running for 10 years. at this point, i'm running 33 MTRs so going to any less gear is just not an option.

Actually, we will do a simple weld fix on a lot of gears.  As long as it is a single tooth and not three or four in a row it's a pretty easy fix, especially when your dealing with grey market tractors and such that are impossible to find the proper parts for. Worm gears are a pain if the entire gear is shot due to the curved gear, but if you just cracked one or too teeth it can easily get you 3 or 4 years of wheeling without a problem.

Mind you, I can't do it myself.  I hand it over to my cousin at the machine shop and let them do it.  That is why I threw in the need to have someone qualified do the work.  Then again, it's not a choice for everyone.

I am looking for a broken rear 5.83 to be use as a sample for overseas manufacture to made in small quantity. Will you sell your broken units to me?
