MANUAL HUBS
« on: July 10, 2007, 09:03:36 AM »
hi, i've been looking around for the manual hubs for my 03 tracker, the local 4x4 shops say WARN doesn't list a part, neither does anybody else.  what are you guys using for these rigs?  are they the same as the older model hubs?  i'd rather buy locally and canadian than order from RR if i can.

thanks - B

i know there is another long thread about this topic which i've read through, it contains mixed opinions and info to some extent, but some great info to help understand the whole deal with swapping the hubs.

for the guys that have done this, nobody experiencing any new problems?  lowrez, you had some bearing issues, how's that moving along now?

anybody ever use the standard WARN hubs as opposed to the premium hubs?  they are 40bucks cheaper, wondering if there is a real difference?

I have used both series of Warn hubs with excellent results, but the premium hubs are definately worth the extra money. They are easier to operate when gunked up,and will last longer.

thanks, appreciate the feedback.  makes sense of course!  the ease of operation will make that money difference worth it everytime!

what are people paying?  i was quoted 185 for the premium and 150 for the standard.

I have been running the stock Aisin ones on my offroad truck for years with a ton of abuse and have yet to have a failure, plus they are dirt cheap at the wreckers ;D

I had the Warn Premiums on the '03 GV for about a month and a half before it was wrecked last year.  REALLY liked them.  Bigger than the Aisins but also NEW with a warranty and definitely felt like good stuff.  I know heft doesn't always = strength but these are one of those items that definitely gives you that impression.  My wife liked them because the dial was very easy to turn.

I will probably buy another set eventually for the XL7 as I've had bad luck buying other people's used Aisins.  The only good set that I know of is on my Tracker and they're staying there.

Installation is easy but make sure you torque the bolts down right.

If you use the Aisins make sure you get the cone washers for the bolts!

Any hub that will fit a 89-98 Geo Tracker/Suzuki Sidekick/Vitara/Escudo/whatever will fit a 99-06ish GV, Vit, Tracker, XL7, etc.

We've discussed Low Rez's issue before and no one really bought what his mechanic was telling him.  If what that guy said was the issue there'd be many many many 4x4's that have manual front hubs with similar bearing issues.  They've only been selling them for 60 years or so now and that's the only time I've ever heard of that cockamamie idea so you ought to see where I'm coming from...

Can you get SuperWinch branded hubs over there? I have fitted those and they are really good. I think they are probably a little smaller than Warn (they don't stick out further than the wheel edge)

I don't know about Suzukis...but it's been my experience with other vehicles that Warn hubs hands down are better than the Superwinch, Mile Marker, and ProComp hubs.  We had a lot of fun over at www.TheRangerStation.com taking bets when people would break their "new" SW, MM, PC hubs that they saved $20 on instead of the Warn hubs they could have bought.

If I can find a set of used Aisins in good shape I'll buy them.
If I can't then I'll save for some Warn Premiums.

Really cool would be some AVM hubs but they aren't common in the Western Hemisphere.

Why, because you want it sometime this decade?  ::)

Warn premiums is what I run and recommend.  Get the ones for Sidekicks or Sammys, both are the same.

I suggest Spidertrax for Hubs and also get the hub bolt upgrade kit they sell.  The bolts that come with the Warns leave something to desire.

You could also call JD's Off-Road. www.jdsoffroad.com.  Tell them I sent you.  Great guys, they sponsored my GV in the PA On-Off Road Rally.  Find your best "veryfiable" price in print or on the net and they'll beat it.

is there a savings on gas when going to the manual hubs. and how hard are they to install?
is there a big problem with the auto not engaging or staying engaged. or is it the strength that is the problem.

There can be a fuel savings as the CV's, axles, diff and drive shaft won't be turning with manual hubs as opposed to turning all the time with the stock drive flanges.
Its a simple unbolt the old drive flange and bolt the manual lockout back on. Shouldn't take any more than 10 minutes per side.
