Diff + t-case breathers + VIDEO OF DEEP WATER FJORDING
« on: July 02, 2007, 11:01:50 PM »
So I know the front diff breather goes right up to the top of the engine. How high does the rear breather go? Also, what about the transfer case?

I took my Sidekick for a little dunk halfway up the headlights today and I was just wondering if I should be worrying about my fluids. The whole floor except for the trunk got soaked by the way...where does the water get in?

my 4 door has the vent behind the rear tail light near the top,the stock tansfer case vents are good but you have to let the rig cool down be for crossing water, your seals are made to keep stuff in (one way) not out, so they will suck water when the case cools.

:o :o :o :o With no snorkel? You do know where the air intake is don't you? You were very lucky not to trash the engine.

On a newer vehicle the water gets in mainly through the sills. They have little openings at the bottom to let condensation out. I found that after a few trips I had so much mud packed in them that they stopped leaking. On an older vehicle the door seals could be leaking. It also worth checking that the rubber bungs are fitted in the floorpan.

I was kind of wondering the same thing on the samurais. I read somewhere about if they get clogged, they can seap out. I guess I'm thinking more about the transmission and transfer case. Being right next to me, I notice the stinky tranny fluid smell. I was thinking maybe the vents are clogged but even if they aren't, and the fluid got kind of warm, I guess I would be able to smell the fumes drifting out the breather vents. I wonder if it would be a good idea to run a tube out of these vents to carry the smell to the back of the vehicle. I don't even know if my diffs have breathers or tubes coming out of them so I guess I should check.  ??? ???

Here is the video of the water hole I went through...I always thought the intake was right on top of the front wheel well...does it go down somewhere then?

Oh its behind the outer side of driver's headlight.  I did not know that when I did this....

I was fortunate nothing bad happened.  I was just up there last week, and the water was a lot lower this time.

Damn, you guys are lucky. I dunked my drivers side front into a hole that was not as deep as that and had to replace my engine when the rod broke two days later on the way to work. Changed the oil and and pulled the plugs on the trail after it hydrolocked, started and missed for a while then ran good for a bit. When I tore it down the number one and number four rod was bent, number four is the one that broke putting two holes through the block and one in the oil gallery.Got me a snorkel to put on though so know I can swim!! LOL

To be fair I thought that too. Two bent conrods later and I discovered that it also comes down alongside the headlight  :(. I had been wondering whether I could justify £200 for a Safari snorkel - the engine bill was £1300! The Suzuki intake is quite well designed with a water trap inside the wing and the airbox acting as a second water trap. On both those videos the headlight only dips down for a few moments, the water traps clearly worked but I reckon you came very close to a major rebuild.
