Need to match up front straight axle??
« on: June 02, 2007, 09:28:19 AM »
I'm building a little off road project and need to find a front straight axle to match a 89 tracker rear....5.125:1 ratio

I just can't make the front independant sytem work for this project :-\ so I need to go with the straight axle setup.

Any help would be greatly appreciated ;)

#1 Width
#2 Ratio
#3 Wheel bolt pattern

BTW It's going into a 2004 Yamaha Rhino...changes gear ratio from 3.67:1 to 5.125:1 and gives it tremendous stability and much more durability.

That's a pretty sweet little project you got going there. More pics would be cool!

Here's another picture..side view, I don't have any others of it as it is sitting in the shop waiting for more front end parts. I just don't like the amount of fabrication it is requiring to install the Tracker independant front assembly so I would like to go with a straight axle if I can get one to match the axle in the rear.
I should be able to run up to 35" tires when it is all done and with the lower gears of the Tracker axles it should climb walls ;D

The only thing I could think of was get a samurai front axle swap in the tracker gears and you can either put some wheel spacers on it to make it the same length or you could cut the tubes and weld in spacers. I believe the sammy axles is like 3 or 6 inchs wider.

I'll do some checking into the Sami axle...so the gears are interchangable huh??? That would be a nice touch...not having to buy more parts everytime I change my mind would be rather refreshing as the pile of old idea parts is getting pretty high in the shop ::)

man is that a bitchin project 8)
the samauri axle is narrower than the tracker, by more than 3"
the gears(and entire carrier) will fit into the samauri axle(might have to change side gears, cant remember)
but who cares about width??? you aint gonna drive it on the hiway? or are you????
it would look bitchin with some 36" iroc's ;D

It is street legal right now...i ride alot of trails in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan and it makes it nice to come off the trails onto the county roads to go into town for food and fuel etc.
By going with the lower gear set-up it has a lower top speed so running down the highway (paved county)could cause some traffic problems but in the U.P. it's doubtful. I think the top speed will be around 35...I had it running 65 with a Honda CR-V rear independant assembly but it died in the sand with the 2.91:1 ratio. so I went the other way with it. I tested it with the 5.125:1 Tracker axle installed and it just about knocks the dentures loose from a dead stop:o ;D

I may give the independant set-up from the Tracker another chance but I'm ready to get this thing dirty and tired of cutting and welding ::)

WOW!  That thing rocks!  What size tires are on it in the pictures?  Keep us posted on your progress.

They are 30x9.50x15 Mud Trac radials...I welded centers in the rims and re-drilled them to fit the Rhino but those will go under the bench with the rest of the old idea parts as I am using the stockers from the tracker. After I get this thing all together I plan to buy a set of 35" Swampers or the like to give it that Monster appearance 8)

Last year while trail riding around the lake I found this at a garage sale for $50...couldn't resist ;D
It shows the Rhino b-4 the Tracker conversion.

I am building up the suspension first to handle more power...there is at least one guy I know of that installed a Yamaha R-6 crotch rocket motor into his. I would like to do something similar in the future but right now I am content with the stock engine and 4x4 system.(660cc w/ high low transfercase)

Good idea with the Sami axle. Put the front diff from the track/kick in it and Spidertrax wheel spacers and you should be good to go. And you don't have to worry about the aluminum front carrier as you do not have the weight or power that a SAmi has.

You find a way to do this conversion economically, you got yourself a business.

Edit:  Crap.  Didn't realize this thread was resurrected from last July.  Wonder how it turned out.
