twisted splines ?????
« on: May 31, 2007, 02:57:49 AM »
Trying to disasemble  my rear to install lockers in a 1989 sidekick . I've got the four flange nuts off the rear , the backing plate loose, and cannot get the axle to pull out of the rear .    Is there something else that im missing ? Our alldata at work shows nothing else as in a circlip that holds the axle in. Just wondering if i may have twisted splines ,  by the way either side will come off . Thanks Dennis

I had to use a slide hammer attached to the end of the axle to get mine out. That bearing is a tight fit in the housing.

Yea, what he said  ;) I spent A LOT of time trying to get my axle out before I drove to the local parts house and rented a slide hammer. After a couple of quick tugs it poped right out. I ended up buying one after a few snapped axle shafts.

I carry a slide hammer in my tool box. that's what it takes to get them out. I also use it to knock them back in.

Big hammer, I got a huge hammer that I hammer on the back... my 87 sammy was hard to get them out the first time, my tracker was alot easier... keep at it!

You can use a high lift jack as a slide hammer also.

flip the brake drum over and put the nuts back on a couple turns. Use the drum like a slide hammer. They will come out..
