I'm with Bash, I love my 410 but I had to replace the Transfer Case and Axles in order to use any aftermarket parts.  Not to mention that Hawk Suzuki is about the only place to find any replacement parts other then E-Bay.  The stock 4 speed will not mount up to a 1.3 or even 1.0 (3 cyl) engine, so at the very least your going to have to put a new engine/transmission in it.

You will have to weld new pads on whatever you drop on, as the springs are 3" closer together then a Sammy, so you can't just buy axles from someone else to put under it.  It can be a pain if you swap hardware a lot.

That being said, if you want a unique rig for a starting point or want to drop new hardware underneath it you could have a great starting point rig.  The stock 970 cc, if you can find one, is a bullet proof little engine.  Doesn't stall at pretty much any angle and doesn't put out enough power to break parts, but it is a little tough on long hills.  And you get the slotted grill, which is a sign that you rock harder then anyone else on the trail.  It's a lesser known fact, but true none the less.   ;D

Just be aware going in that it is not a Sammy, a lot of parts will match up but a lot of what you do is going to have to be customized.

He told me a story about having a stock sammy  a long time ago that he out climbed some heavly modified geeps.
What are the gear ratios on the diffs, as compared to the sammy, and are the axels the same width, just the pads are diffrent?  It alledgedly has few miles on a rebuilt engine, so who knows what went bad.
Thanks

I don't recall the axle ratios but the axles are very different from the Samurai axles, they are narrower and the diffs are smaller too.

4.10 ratio in the diffs, 3" shorter axles.  You can get lockers off of E-Bay but I would save up for some Sammy or Toy axles to put under it depending on what you want to do.

And they story about a stock sammy out climbing some jeeps is probably true.  Zuki's have a nasty habit of doing that upon occasion.  ;D

What is the engine doing that makes you think it has gone bad?

The good thing about that 410 is the stock foldy windshield and the half doors. I sure wish now that I would have grabbed those half doors off of the 410 I had at one time. Oh well. I think Eric would have said some thing about the missing doors.

I had a 84 SJ410 for more than two years until it threw a rod back in 2005.  I understand why your friend said it could out climb a Jeep.  On the trails and hills I could hang with anybody.  Mine had a hard time getting up to 65 mph, but that was a blessing because Upstate NY troopers weren't too kind to me.  I would rebuild the engine --it builds character.

Only one model of the SJ-410 had the half doors, and one model of the Santana.  Sadly, I have never seen one.  :(

The stock folding windshield is nice but we don't have that extra roll bar, just the targa bar.  :)  I think the engine runs a bit quieter then the 1.3L as well.
