Northern Colorado wheeling?
« on: April 19, 2007, 08:30:59 PM »
Hey guys, I'm looking for suggestion on some trails and sites to see in northern Colorado. Me and my brothers are heading up there in late July. Nothing too hardcore, I' m wheeling a mostly stock(2" lift, 29" tires, rear locker) Sidekick, and my brother have a stock 97 Cherokee and a Bronco II. Mainly looking for some good scenery off of the beaten path. We've run around Silverton, so anything like Imogene Pass, Alpine Loop, or Hayden Pass is about as tough as we'd like to go. Remember, I'm from the flatlands on the Gulf, so driving up and down is out of the ordinary to me! Thanks,

Try Mosquito pass. It's a "short-cut" to Aspen from I-70. I was warned to "not go without another vehicle".  They said "If you go in the winter and get stuck, you're there until spring". And "good luck finding somebody to pull you out".

I have this on my list of things I need to do before I die.

I also heard of some place up around Glenwood Canyon. They have 4x4 tours there as well.

Vail is nice in the late fall before ski season (late October- less crowded) and make sure you hit the hot springs in Glenwood Springs. It's awesome in the middle of winter because you're in a hot spring outside and it's snowing!.

If you know how to ski, and raft, and can do 4 wheeling, You could pretty much make a living there doing your hobbies!

I'm sure there's more but I can't think of too much right now since I worked all night.

Shoot me some specific questions and I'll see if I can't get you an answer. I know downtown Denver like the back of my hand.

Just crossed my mind. Colorado is full of Suzuki s. check Craigslist and Rockymountainnews/Denverpost for sale listings. You're bound to find a deal or two.

Things above 10,000 feet (most of what was mentioned) can be dicy untill late June because of lingering snow. Mosquito Pass goes between Alma (south of Breckenridge) and Leadville and is unually not doable untill late July. Since we had a average snowpack this year even some of the lower forest service roads may be blocked by snow on the north facing sides.

I think there are some forum members that are located along the front range (Ft Collins, Denver, CO Springs, etc) that may have some more info. There are usually some good runs in the Rampart Range south east of Denver and in the upper Arkansas Valley around Buena Vista.

Welcome to 4 wheeling at 1.5MiHi ;D

June should be fine. Me and my friends usually make our first trip up during the last week of May... All lingering snow is gone by mid june at the latest.
Also, check Amazon or your local book store for "Jeep Trails to Colorado Ghost Towns." Very cool stuff!

Northern Front Range:

Moody Hill / Crystal Peak.

In my back yard:  Jenny Creek Trail, and a zillion miles of mining roads.

Look for the Chuck Wells book... (Shoot, what's the name?)  Same guy that wrote the guide book for Moab.

Here you go!
