Suzuki Hungary unit to recall 40,000 SX4 cars

BUDAPEST (Reuters) -- The Hungarian unit of Suzuki Motor Corp. will recall 40,000 SX4 vehicles throughout Europe due to a potential fault in the hand brake, national news agency MTI reported today.

MTI cited Suzuki communications chief Tamas Tihanyi as saying that the control affects almost 6,300 cars in Hungary, and Suzuki has since corrected the assembly process, preventing the fault from reoccuring.

Suzuki spokeswoman Viktoria Ruska said all the SX units produced before Dec. 8, 2006, would be checked.

"This is routine technical control ... there is no need for repairs or a change in parts," Ruska told Reuters.

Suzuki made nearly 164,000 cars at its Hungarian plants last year, 20 percent more than in 2005 and plans to boost output to 300,000 units by 2008.

The Hungarian unit employs 4,800 workers and is one of the biggest foreign investors and private sector employers in the country.
