WANTED: Spring Over Thoughts From You.
« on: April 05, 2007, 03:23:45 PM »
ok, hi eveyone. i have been registered on the site for a while now but untill recently had not been real active. i want to get some other opinions on what route to go for a spring over lift on my sami.

I am having a tough time deciding between Spidertrax kit, Sky's kit, or piecing one together on my own. i realize that the perches from sky are alot easier to use and i like that.

I am limited on my funds for this project but i want to do it right once. if i save money now but have to re-do stuff down the road, than its not economical. i know that alot of people on here have done the spring over. and almost everyone has learned something they would have done different had they known.

Any information you all have would be greatly appreciated.

how about peicing together a YJ lift?

just get hangers and some used springs, then go with some EZ weld spring perches, a drive line spacer and some break lines, some cheap shocks and some home made shackels.

its an idea...

Im going to get my YJ parts from http://www.trailtough.com/
just go to the "suspension components" category and the hangers, and shackles are all in there, then you can search for some springs to run, and get your shocks.

hope that helps out

To be completley honest with you if you are limited on $$ why not stay spring under for now and do gears/lockers first? You may be suprised at what you can do with a well set up little sammy. Most of the guy's around here are doing just that now days. It took alot to convince me that little guy's could wheel good.

Ya man it makes perfect sence, you got nothing if you have lift, but no traction.

i was thinking of a lift to clear the tires i have on it. they have no issues unless i flex it out to the max. then, they rub a bit. and that just drives me nuts. they are not huge, only like 30".

maybe i will consider lockers and maybe shackle it 2" to get my needed extra clearance.
thanks for your input. i will soon be on the look out for some gears and lockers soon.

yeah,  I wheeled a samurai with an add a leaf, lockers front and rear, and a calimini 4 to 1 t-case kitan 30 inch tires,  for like a year, and ran circles a stock sami with a spoa,  my only trouble was hangin my belly up alot,  but i never tipped over until I did the rocky road 5 inch spoa kit,  I have alot more flex now but i'm not really used to it yet i've tipped over like 6 times now,  but I like not rubbing my tires and i like the ground clearence,  hope that helps.

How about a body lift? You can get a 1" or 2" body lift from Sky. They are cheap, about $100 or so. Won't help with articulation but will give you some needed tire room. Or for the same price, a set of spring perchs will get you a ghetto spoa going. I've been running one of these lifts for the last 10 yrs, with driveline spacers and a dropped drag link. Of course, that ghetto lift is going to be trashed in favor of a Trailtough wangler spring swap. ;D

Zukini,
Here is my rig with 1 inches of lift (2 inch lift shackles) and 29 inch tires.
Locked in the rear did great. and was only about 350 for locker and shackles.

Did great that way, wheeled it on most of the trails at Evans creek WA, and Elbe hills wa never really had any problems.

Course here it is now. :P

Hope this helps.
If you want to see more stock wheeling picks let me know. :)
