New exhaust help?
« on: March 17, 2007, 06:21:01 AM »
I sold my old van and I am using the $$ to fix up my Tracker a little.  I have a 1998  4 door 2wd model.

I ordered a K&N air filter and a reciever hitch (I have a small boat) so far.

I am planning on installing a glasspack, probably a 2" Flowtech "Red Hot", because it is easily available in my area.

The question is:  How difficult will this be to install?  What will I need as far as muffler clamps, reducers, etc.?  I know clamps suck, but I don't have a welding machine.  Are there any problems that I am going to run into?

Stock tracker exhaust is 1 3/4 inch o.d., so if you wanted to put a 2 inch (im assuming this is o.d.) muffler on then you would need an adapter piece that is 1 7/8 inch on one side and 2 1/8 inch on the other side

Glass packs are not legal off road in some states, unless you run a spark arrester after it.

I checked around and it will cost about $75-$100 to buy a glasspac and have it installed.  I think I will go that route and let somebody else deal with it.

Not legal for road use in Michigan but people still run them...

Most places consider the cat a spark arrestor.

I put an exhaust on this past weekend. I bought 24" of 2.25" pipe and a Cherry Bomb Turbo Muffler(not the roadrunner glasspack)(Total cost was $70, muffler, pipe and hanger stock)
I cut off the stock pipe after the CAT and slid the 2.25" pipe over the CAT outlet and welded it, then put the muffler on the other end of that pipe and welded it. Welded on a couple hangers and put it on.
It's crazy loud, so much so it vibrates the truck - I have to go to an exhaust shop and have an over-axle pipe made up(2.25"), I got quoted $45 for that, I'll get that done very soon as the loudness is starting to get to me.
One question - I want to re-route my tailpipe so it exits out a hole I'm going to put in the bumper, are there and concerns with doing this?

I'd say make sure it isn't too close to the gas tank or rubbing on anything and you should be fine.

After seeing the amount of rust now on my tailpipe after one Michigan winter I think next time the exhaust will not be routed directly behind the rear tire. :P

So if I get a glasspack that is 1-3/4"ID Inlet & Outlet, I shouldn't need any adapters, right? ???
