« on: January 28, 2007, 02:07:52 PM »
I want to lift my 4 door Zr2 but I am unsure on ride comfort and saftey. I want a 2 or 3 inch lift but I dont want a real bad ride. Let me know what you guys recommend

Old Man Emu - it will actually improve the ride, and provide a modest lift.  Can't go wrong.  Reassuringly expensive, too.

From what I hear, any other suspension lift will have an adverse effect on ride.

If you want more, a body lift will allow larger diameter tires.  The unsprung weight will increase, so ride will suffer somewhat, also fuel consumption (increased weight), and the final drive ratio will be raised, which will affect your speedo readings and reduce your cruising speed in top gear.

So if I want bigger tires its better to go with a body lift? Would a body lift cause more body roll  '' feeling top heavy '' or would a suspension lift. Should I buy a complete lift springs, spring lift, and bodylift.  Do I need the strut extensions? I just want to make sure I buy a good lift kit. I just want to do it once. My wife will be driving the truck so I dont want any junk. Thanks Ben

Hey bud. I just put a 2" susp lift into my 1999 tracker. 2" coil lift with new Rancho 5000 shocks in rear and Old Man Emu struts in front. My truck drives 1000% times better on and off road. I could not believe the difference. I also dropped a 2" body lift into it. I run 31/15/7 mud terrain tires and there is no rubbing at all. If you only want 2" I'd do the suspension before body lift in a heart beat. body lift seams easy but it doesn't look as good plus the new shocks make a world of difference.

The only real safe way to go bigger tires is to do suspension lift. If you wanna be able to run the rubicon and Moab safley and without worry, you could do 2 1/2 suspension and 3 inch body  and still run highway safe with 31's. Just a thought.

Just to clarify - Always start with the suspension lift; add body lift if you must have even larger tires than you can manage with the suspension lift.  Personally I would stay with the largest tires that will clear with a suspension lift, and leave it at that.

zr2, your truck is real nice!  I saw it on Cardomain before I found this site. Good Job! I have to get there slowly so my wife doesn't see a drastic change but yours is about where I want to be eventually.

I put a 2" coil spacer (suspension) lift on our previous '03 Grand Vitara last summer and have a lot of info about it on my CarDomain site:

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2175091/2

The ride was a bit stiffer but not horrible or anything.  Enough that you noticed it but not enough to be uncomfortable.  The GV was my wife's daily driver until the accident.  I have every intention of lifting the XL7 as well...

...but this time I'm saving my pennies and getting an Old Man Emu lift.  Easier install, better ride and flex, better all around.  I'm also not fond of the the CV angles on these things with a 2" suspension lift so the 1.5" or so of OME sounds good to me.

Yeah, '89 Toyota FJ60 front shocks are about the perfect collapsed and extended dimensions for a GV/XL7/Tracker with about 2" of lift.
The only thing is their lower eye is a little bigger than the lower bolt on the Suzuki.  A simple trip to the hardware store fixes that.

If you need more length consider '98 F150 2wd rear shocks.  Running some NAPA Response shocks like that on my Tracker.
