Samurai Manual Steering Rebuild
« on: June 21, 2005, 05:05:25 AM »
Has anyone here ever rebuilt their Samurai steering box?  The problem I am having is not the bearings or inner workings per se, but the output seal going out.

This has happened to two steering boxes now.  I chunked the first one because the FSM said it was non-rebuildable but I would like to replace the output seal in this one.  I seem to recall one website that listed the seal part number but I can't locate it now.

Finally, I know some folks say just go to power steering, but I actually prefer my manual steering setup.

get a box from a sami that went "tracker power" ... probably free if you hunt.

I've got two extra boxes, the problem is that the seal always goes bad due to old age.  I'm looking for info on the seal, like a part# so that I can replace it.

I took a look at an '88 FSM (http://www.ackerdackerly.com/sam8817-7-end.pdf) section 18, but didn't find a part number. (note to self:  Put a link to the FSM in the FAQ site...)

I would give Hawk Strictly Suzuki a call at 888-SAMURAI.  He probably knows if the gearbox can be rebuilt and, if so, has the parts.

Otherwise, he probably has a replacement unit to sell you unless you can find one locally at a salvage yard...
