Cold air intake for tracker - HELP!
« on: December 24, 2006, 02:55:58 PM »
OK, I was checking the air filter today and the piece that has the resonator on it broke where it hooks up to the intake >:(. This is the piece that goes from the air box to the intake. The piece is like a piece of vaccum cleaner hose where it broke.

So,........... I thought that I would look into a cold air intake system. Looked all over the web and cannot find one for my 96 tracker! I have the 1.6 L 16 valve engine. The air intakes that I have found go to 94 ::).

Has anyone found this product for a 96 tracker and if you have can you tell me where?

Have you built one and can you give me detailed instuctions on how to build and if you did build one, what did you do with the MAS?

Should I get a piece of large radiator hose and mount where the piece is?

Any help is appreciated

I'd fix the factory intake.  If you look at what the so-called "cold air" intakes really do you'll see that they just mount an air filter on the end of a pipe in the engine compartment.  This is not "cold air" that they draw in.  They suck hot air out of the engine compartment.  The factory intake sucks air from around the headlight and pipes it through the fender and into the air filter box (at least on my '89 Sidekick).  THAT is cold air.  Cold air is denser=more power.

My 2 cents.

Ya, bigpig has the idea, all the under hook K&n "cold air intakes" seem like a joke to me.
Its like, OH yeah! lets put the air filter directly over the exhaust manifold.
I guess i could pull easyer but thats about it.  I think most people get a placebo effect going when they put theres on.
But true cold air usually comes from fender, or by the grille, or lights. Pretty much to sum it up, out side of the engine compartment.

Go with a snorkle, i mean ya cant go wrong with it.

Dont get me wrong, I'd like to keep what I have with the stock air box, but I'd bet that little piece that broke will cost me as much as the cold air intake ::).

I had put a 2 inch body lift on the tracker serveral months ago and I think this is what stressed the piece that broke. So if I bought a new resonator piece and put the same stress on it, I think that it will finally break again :'(.

For the time being, I hooked up a piece of wet vac hose that is almost the same diameter to it and it seems to be OK for now, I just want to make it look a little better and I dont know how long the vac hose is going to last!

With this said, I guess what your telling me is to get a piece of large radiator hose and go from the MAS to the intake with it? I think that the hole on the exit end of the MAS and the hole to the air intake are 2 different sizes so I may have to do a little work getting a spacer to fit inside the larger hole so that I can use the same diameter radiator hose.

Any more suggestions? Thanks!

are you talkin about that rubber tube thingy??  Shouldnt cost you that much to replace from a junkyard Track/Kick.  On my 93 (smaller tube, different, I know) when I split the thing, I picked up a used one for 2 bucks at the junkyard.

Yes, it is rubber where it split and hard plastic to the air box. My thinking is that this piece split due to the excess stress on it from lifting the tracker 2 inches. When I lifted my tracker the airbox lifted and the motor stayed in the same place. This caused the piece that has the resonator on it to be at a 2 inch angle. When I check the air filter it seems to have more stress on it than before I lifted the vehicle. So, buying a new piece whether new or junk yard seems to not be the answer. Im thinking either modifying the existing piece, replacing with a different piece of piping / tubing, or cold air intake.

When I did my B/L
I put Spacers on the InTake Tube so as not to stress it.
That might help a lil more.

At ho-depot you can get rubber junctions.  I had to use one where the intake finally connects to the throttle body/intake manifold, and it's held up for 2 years with no problems.  You could buy 2 and get a piece of plastic piping and make a filler piece with rubber flexible ends on it to replace that pipe.  I haven't done it, but i'm sure it could be done.  Replacing that piece shouldn't be too hard.  The wet-vac hose will probably be just fine too.  Just check it every now and then to see if it splits.  You could also duct-tape the crap out of that wet-vac hose to help insulate it a bit and keep it held together tight.

The only way to make it look neat will be to buy a replacement used one or new from a dealer, but i myself would just piece it together.

A 3" body lift needs spacers where the metal tube bolts above the exhaust manifold, but a 2" body lift doesn't really need a lift there.
