bigger tyres on grand vitara?
« on: October 05, 2006, 06:15:10 PM »
i did a scearch, cant find (easy) what i'm looking for..

how BIG tyres can i fit without any rubbing OR cutting?

i'm planning to get a OME kit, but not yet.

i was considering 235/70-16, but those will rub with or without lift.

maybe i should go 225/70-16? 225/75-16?

only interesting tyre i found is BRIDGESTONE DUELER 694 102 in 225/70-16

not a true offroad tyre, but i think it will suit my needs.

any experiences with bridgestone? is BF Goodridge much better?

CE1_2NR has the on his stock rims and the only time they rub is in reverse with one tire pushed up from a bump

sounds good, i like the looks of 235/70 -but to stay legal i can only fit tyres 5% bigger :'(

that makes 225/70 (4,79%bigger) just legal, but not that cool :-\

I have the 694's (only in stock size) and they are great!  I haven't played in much mud yet, and even if I had I haven't used MT's to compare them too, but that said I have given them a good bit of abuse on gravel and rocks and they have handled it really well.  They have a nice square shoulder which seems to dig in well on gravel, and they are probably much better on road the the BF Goodridge AT's (they certeainly cost a bunch more).  A friend with a GV ended up getting a set of Geolander AT's or something, they came recomended coz they have been designed more for that size tyre and vehicle, maybe just a sales pitch but he says they are a night and day difference to the OME tyres although the bridgesone's should be too.

I will certainly be interested to hear how you go with 225/70 or /75, I'm thinking about something that size when I'm eventually ready for a new set.  I don't want to make the little 2.0L have to turn much more!

I guess I disagree here.  235 70 16 will definitely rub on my 1999 GV without any lift, and depending on the brand and exact size, might rub badly.  I ran that size for two years, and it's a pretty close call even with suspension lift.  It also depends on whether it's a Tracker, Vitara, or Grand Vitara, as they all have slight differences in wheel well room.  I think I used to run a 225 70 16 before I got my lifts (body and susp.) and it looked good and didn't rub.  Can't remember for sure, but I'm pretty positive.  Good luck.

How are you guys dealing with the speedo differences?

With those 245's my poor 2.0 would be struggling to get to any speed...

Well.....I have the V6 with the 5 speed.  It's a 1999, so I've only got 155hp versus 165hp in the 2002 and up.  235 70 16s weren't bad at all (6-7% difference).  Now, with 245 75 16s, I'm feeling it a little.  I've got a K&N filter, and I'm running platinum spark plugs.  I'm thinking about using premium fuel, and my next set of plugs are Bosch Platinum +4 (I have them now, but haven't installed).  Hopefully that'll help.  As for the speedo, it's now off by about 12%.  That's a little funky....I was just getting used to calculating the 6-7% difference.  Hopefully I'll get the 5.125 gear change within the next year or so (versus my 4.3 diffs) to help with the power loss and speedo.  One slow step at a time :-\

i run the bridgstone 694s in stock size on my gv and they are great, for stock size i made the best choice.

for size i ran 225/75/16 on my 2l vitara softtop, they were firestone firehawks, they are a great tire and cheap( no lift )

and a cheap fix for power loss is a set of extractors, made a didderence
I supply GV Snorkels at outdoorauto.com.au

Where do you get a set of extractors for the 2l??  Ok so the power mods a way down the track for me but there is no harm in planning ahead (just just did a rear main, got new computer and about to get a new camera, any car mods will have to wait even longer  :(  ).

think i will go 225/70-16, my speedo is 7km off.

so with the 225/70 it might be less off :)

When I had my GV with M/trans and ran 225/70/16 the speed-o was right on the money.  But if yours is off it won't be by much.
