squeeking when turning....
« on: August 26, 2006, 05:11:20 AM »
about a week ago i developed a pretty loud and really annoying squeek when i turn left or right.  and even sometimes after i turn and i'm driving straight it'll start then stop and start again etc...  it's coming from the front end, and sounds like either right under the front or from both wheels...  is it time for new cv's?

Mike Do you have power steering? If you do check belt and or fluid level. CV's as a rule don't squeak. more like a grinding noise.

check lower ball joints in the lower arms. the rubber boots could be split open, and the joint filling with crud, or drying out.

yup i do have p/s... i didn't even give that a thought.  that would explain why the noise seems to be consistant with me turning the steering wheel.  i can be going down the road and slightly turn the wheel left and right(kinda make like swerving only really slightly) and i can get the squeek to well squeek... :P

i will check my balljoints just to be safe while i'm at it but i had the wheels and everything off a few weeks ago and checked everything out while i was working and the cv's and everything else seemed fine...

thanks guys,
mike

well the p/s fluid level is normal, belts are in spec,  and the balljoint's look to be in decent shape.  i realised that the noise isn't from the p/s anyway because in order for the noise to be present i have to actually be moving some not the typical p/s belt screech noise.  it makes me think that it's something with the cv joints or the wheel bearings even because it has to be a part that rotates with the wheel,  unless perhaps it's just some loose gravel stuck in my brakes or something... hmmm....

Wheel bearings rumble, CVs tick and clunk,
power steering squeals, to me all of these
noises are different, a squeek is like a body
mount shifting or an old vehicle when metal
pannels rub together

Your front breaks might be down to the warning tabs.

UMMMM Lets see $12.00 pads or $12.00 pads and new rotors. Might add a little fender damage too if you don't stop in time.
