has anyone done this before?
« on: July 26, 2006, 12:01:32 AM »
i have an extra 1.3 liter twin turbo fuel injected mazda rotary engine sitting around, with a 5 speed manual transmission out of my rx7, and i think it would be awesome in my 89 sidekick.  the part that would give me the most trouble would be bolting the transfer case to my mazda 5 speed.  how difficult would it be to mount the transfer case farther back, separated from the transmission (divorced transfer case?)  how could i fix the linkage for the transfer case?  would this affect the ride quality or suspension travel due to the different lengths of the driveshafts?  i know this is DEFINATELY not a common swap, but a 260+hp engine that can easily turn 10,000 rpm's would be awesome in the mud bogs.  any input will be appreciated, as i really dont know how to make this work.  thanks!

I was going to suggest a Sami transfer case as well.  ;D

You would need to build a new set of mounts, but doesn't it have the right offsets for the front diff and rear axel already?

I've seen a couple of Samurai's with that motor...but never a Trac/kick
Do a search for "mazuki" and see what you come up with.
Good luck on the swap and let us know how it turns out!!

in my rx7, the engine had 223 lbs/ft of torque at the wheels.  what would be a stronger t-case, sammy or nissan?  i wont be able to start on it for a couple of weeks, but i'll post pics as soon as i start the swap.

The Nissan would probably be the slightly stronger case, but the Sammy would probably be strong enough for the application.  One nice thing is the Sammy case is gear driven instead of chain.  Since we have people putting a 302 in front of the Samurai T-Case it would probably be more then enough to handle the HP.

Not to mention your axels will probably give way before your transfer case.  ;D

too bad it is 2wd now it would of been neat but that motor is a screamer like motorcycle engine RPM's don't know if it would be a good 4wd engine unless you do like rally but not trail or rocks !!!
