Hand throtle

what do ya'll think about having a hand throtle. it works great for rocks and doubles as a cruise control.

Gonna do one for mine soon. Got a choke cable sittin in my garage waitin to go in.

How did you mount the cable to the throttle body? Custom bracket or what?

i think im gona try a twist throttel off a motorcycle and mount it on my shifter 8)

i conected it to the cable by the foot pedal there are holes on the steering colume bace that i used to feed the cable through. i tried a motorcycle trotle first i mounted to the gear shift then to dash but it was to combersome. it had to be mounted to something to work this way i can hold it in my hand and move it around.

I've got one out of a Toyota diesel van I'm going to fit.

It's the high idle type you can pull out to any setting  and turn it to lock it there.

I built one out of mtn. bike parts from the local bike shop.  It was about twenty bucks.  It uses a brake lever on the gear shift and the other end hooks to the gas pedal lever.  Its super simple and works great.

I've thought about this, but then wanted to take it a step further and have some sort of friction mechanism that holds the throttle steady so I don't have to keep my hand on it.  Maybe like a shift lever with indents.  That way when I hit a bump and my hand comes off of the lever the throttle stays the same.  

I know, I know.  Kinda dangerous if you're the type to have seizures while on the road to keep the throttle going, un attended, but it certainly would be nice.

But with our ultra low range, it can climb up any hill at idle anyway.  I'd just be stepping it up a few rpms.

Just finished mine this arvo,
my cable was out of a van and it's very short and wouldn't reach into the engine bay so I cheated and made this little bracket to go on the pedal instead.


idle position


Foot on the gas, the cable won't interfere with the pedal as the bracket is independent  ;)

I've still got to mount the cable in the dash but I gave it a quick run to try it, works OK too  ;D

I am not a fan of hand throttles.

On the other hand, it would be tres chic to have the throttle quadrant out of one of the old F-111's I used to work on - hmm.

Anyway, I find that if I'm in a sticky place, where I need to work the gas, brake, and clutch, I just use the hand brake, and it works just fine.

I put one in using a mountain bike shifter with the detents and it works great.  Rather than using it for driving I found myself using it more to keep the revs up when winching or running the ARB pump to fill tires though.

yea, a hand throttle isn't just used for driving.  it would get used every time you would need to bring RPM up (winching,  jumping starting someone else) insted of jumping in and out of the kick.

I didn't fit so I could use it drive ether, I wanted it for upping the revs while winching,holding a few rev's while running other high drain electrical stuff and every now and then it gets a miss when I come out of the river and it just need to be held above idle until I can open the hood and spray the electrics.

I installed a 2nd optima batery to run my accessories and a 94 amp gm alternator. But I see what you mean.
