Suspension lift and body lifts
« on: March 15, 2006, 07:22:06 AM »
I live in Michigan and was wondering if any one knew were to buy lift kits?  I have a 96 soft top tracker.

I have found this site..   http://www.rocky-road.com/kicksus.html     but would also like to know what others use or recommend.

Also I need a new soft top.  Where should I look for new top.

Also there are other members of this board that make
lift and suspension items, depends on your budget and
your overall goal of what you want to do with your Trucklet

The size of tire you want to run is also a factor as well as
gearing, there are a limited # of gear ratios available these
days, and weather you have an Auto or Manual trans.

Brows the topics, read the articles, give it a month or so
to get up to speed with what is available and see where
you fit into this addiction we call the Evil Seed

Welcome to the board

Man, I was just where you are a few months ago..

a few words of advice..

look for the biggest tires you think you will ever want, then get some even bigger...LOL...

Consider trying to gear and lift for 33's right off the bat.... seriously..  at least 31's..  if you are ANYTHING like me, you will want more than you end up with.

Calmini, Rocky-Road, Sky, Shrockworks, Aftermarket4x4,Petroworks,Masterkit1 and others are all good places to find stuff you need.

2inches of suspension will make 235's up to maybe some smaller 30's runnable off road

2 more inches of body lift,   OR some decent trimming will allow 31's, and correct backspacing added will get them close to 12 inches wide..

33's deserve 3" suspension and 3" body, or less body and more trimming...

It's all about how you want it to sit, look, handle, etc..

You have longer springs and shocks/struts, or coil spacers and strut mount flips or extentions to consider..

You have excellent A-arm included kits with nice engineering and fair pricing from Calmini

You have several types of body lifts available, or you can trim the fenders fairly easily for even more clearance.

Axles/CV's and other componants start getting pretty stressed with a big heavy 31 on a steel wheel, and start breaking fairly easily if you push them... but Toyota CV shafts will convert over with information found on this site.

In a few months, reading all the info on this site, I have come a long way in my knowledge of what is available, and how to get'r done..  Check the links at the top of this page.  Gear Guide lists some GREAT Vendors.  the Archive has lots of great articles I am STILL reading and learning from.

Good luck.. you will get bit with the bug and you will be hopeless soon, sure hope you have some room on your credit cards.. LOL....

Check out the readers ride section at the top of this forum, and at the top of the page, so you can see how all the different lift and tire/wheel combinations look before you spend your money!

Welcome and post pics of your build!!!

You can always go the econo route and do coil spacers and a body lift until you get the money to go really big.  I did a home made body lift for about $20 in parts and coil spacers are cheap to buy.  You could do a nice body lift from Sky's for about $120 plus coil spacers from him and have about 4" of lift for around $200 or so.  That should fit 31's nicely.

The pic in my signature below is how mine looks now with Sky's coil spacers and my own body lift.  It has 235 size tires (about 29") on it.  It would look better with 31's, but I can't afford to replace nearly new tires just yet.

Now how about pics? ;D

Sky's   set-up works great.If I had gears I would trim for 33's.....

Where are you at in Michigan? I am from the west side north of Muskegon. If you are around here you can take a look at my set up. Here are the lifts I have used on 2 of mine.

Calmini: I have a Calmini 3" kit on mine. Nice off-road suspension system but it is expensive. You get what you pay for. It works awesome.

Boondox: My wifes Kick has a Boondox Motorsports lift. It uses springs, not spacers, that lift it 3". It also has strut spacers, differential drop brackets, rear A-arm spacer and longer rear shocks. Her's rides smoother than mine on the street. About half the price of the Calmini.

Mine also has a Boondox 3" body lift. I like the design of it the best of any 3" body lift kit's I have seen.

A general question since we are on the topic.

I have read that for the calimini 3'' body lift you will have to go into the bad to remove and replace the frame bolts....

which, if the case,  presents a huge problem for me as I have put sound proofing down...

where as the sky is simply an extention..

The bolts are removed from underneath, not inside the bed

Right, they are studs that are fixed to the body, welded into the floor. Depending on where your from, if the floor is rusty and rotton, and the studs spin or break away from the floor, you may need to use a bolt. The lock nuts used shouldn't be overly tight, so they should come off easily. I checked all mine last weekend as I'm planning to do a body lift myself, I'm in the north/east, and mine were okay.

Well Quaddawg has got me started down this road.  I am a big ATV rider, and we take atvs all over the country to ride.  So there I was reading an ATV forum and come acrossed a posting comparing a tracker to a side by side atv.  Quaddawg puts a couple of pics of some lifted trackers, and here I go.  I have this 96 tracker that I traded an old tanning bed for. So the tracker is in great shape other than needing a top.  So I have almost no money into this tracker.  The plan is that I am going to give it to my son when he turns 16 at the end of the summer.  I figured that I would lift it for him and make it cooler than it is in stock form.  So I start drivng it due to gas prices and find that I love this thing.  Its cheap to operate and maintain.

So I am going to lift this tracker, give it to the boy then I will probably buy another to lift and trick out for me.  I do not need to be able to rock climb but will off road it.  So I was looking to get about 6 inches of lift.  The rockey road site has a 2 1/2 inch spring lift a two inch body lift and an 1 1/8 coil spacers.  This would cost about 900 dollars, but I am always looking to do it cheaper.  So help me out as this is quaddawgs fault for posting on an atv forum.  I like the idea of the do it your self body kits, or anything else that saves money.

Heh Heh....   GOT YA! didn't I?  lol....  that's funny.. Which site? Cob's? or ATVPosters?

Yeah, I have been kinda neglecting my Polaris since I got my BIG atv....  :D

Do your son's with Spacers and a cheap body lift..., get him a locker, and some wheels and 30's or 31's and call it done.. you won't BELIEVE where it will go..

Save the money on springs and a-arm lifts for YOURS!!!   LOL..

Seriously..  The boy won't notice any ride difference.. but you probably will.. do yours "right" with springs, and/or arms (Calmini kit is a GREAT value, if I had it to do over again, I would have sprung for the 3" Calmini Suspension lift.. FOR SURE)    Start looking for 5.83 or at least 5.62 gears for yours now...... and shoot at putting yours on 32x10 or 32x11's of some brand or another...

I am seriously hooked.. I spent yesterday afternoon under mine, pulling the front axle housing and sticking in a set of 5.62:1 gears...  10% lower than stock, since my tires are about 10% larger than stock (in height... almost 100% wider in width) and it made a BIG difference on drivability...

They lose some of their Street Fun when you go big tires without regearing the axles... they just don't "Scoot" around like they do with stock 27" tires on them...

I thought I would be done with mine a LONG time ago... but I just keep finding stuff that I just really need for trail riding.... ;)   Man, If I weren't divorced already.. I would be now.. my $600 trail beater has become a dead president eating little beast.... :D

But, you know what?  I still have only about a THIRD of the cost of one of those new fancy side by sides.... and I can't wait to compare them on the trails..

The weekend of Zuwharrie, I will be at Windrock Mountain, at the annual Windrock Spring Run, comparing a Trackick to a Rhino, and a Prowler...  Straight up trail riding, ease of use, hill climbing, etc... we will see........

It was on Cobs site.  I thought the tracker would be perfect for a 16 year old.  Not to much giddy up, can take the top off, don't have to worry about him wanting a killer stereo as it would be to easy to steal good on gas, what not to love....other than all the wind noise at 80 mph.  So maybe I should just start out with the body lift and add coil spacers for him.  I was thinking so 30 inch or 31 inch tires will be plenty.
