What top speed should I end up with?
« on: March 12, 2006, 02:55:42 AM »
After installing 33 Super Swamper SSR’s on my 1.3 Samurai with 6 inches of lift and Dana 44's, what do you expect my top speed would be? I’m just wondering what performance mods (if any) I would need to be able to drive properly on the highway (i.e. 60 – 70 mph). The engine runs fine now with no problems. Keep in mind the 33’s are almost 34’s and weigh a whole lot more than you would expect.

What I have in mind performance wise is a Doug Thorley header, new exhaust system, K&N air filter, and an Isk cam. Does anyone have any better ideas for getting me some relatively cheap horsepower? I thought about a 1.6 engine swap but it ends up being pretty damn expensive - $800+ seems a lot since you could almost buy the car for that, or a Lexus V8 1uz-fe (I love that engine!). ;D

Oops! forgot to mention that! ::) That's another little dilemma I have. I have done some research and that just made me even more confused. So many people have so many different opinions about what is best, I just don’t know anymore. :o

Gears were pretty much a given anyway. I'll refrase the question: What performance mods and gears should I buy in order to get my highway speeds up to scratch.

Use this calculator to find your speed with different gears and tires:

So by just changing the t-case gears alone I should be okay then? I would like to think that would work. I will give it a try anyways and see how it goes. T-case gears are the way to go are they? I used to believe 5.12s were perfect for 33’s, then 6:1 came out and now they have 8:1 – they are all supposed to be perfect for 33’s, so I don’t know. ???

The 6.5 gears are supposed to bring your high range into the stock gear ratios with 33" tires.  The 8:1 should bring your high range back to stock for 35".  That is asuming you keep the 3.73 tires.

I run a 6.5 and 5.12 gears, but that is with a SJ-410.  And I can only do about 45 with my 4 speed.   ;D

I like using transfer case gears instead of regearing the diffs, but that does put more of a strain on your center sections.  On the other hand you can use stock gears as replacements.  Not to mention with the new transfer case you get the lower low range at the same time.

thanks for the info. ;)

If perhaps it still doesn’t meet my requirements, or I just get greedy and want even more power and speed ;D(you can never have too much) what performance mods would you recomend to get me good results?

OK, these seem to be the most obvious ones: should I run a 4:1 t-case and 4.62 R&P gears, or go for a 6:1 t-case alone.

The help is appreciated. :)

Yeah, just buy a Trackick with the motor and sell what you don't need to recoup some of your dough.  That will give you more power and FI.  Depending on what you pay for it you may be money ahead compared to the cost of a header and other parts for your 1.3 w/carb.

Yeah, I will keep my eyes peeled for a cheap donor car. If I can find one with a hardtop it should be good as they sell for quite a bit.

And about gears…should I go a 4:1 t-case and 4.62 R&P gears, or go for a 6:1 t-case by itself?

If you can   ALWAYS regear the diffs.. takes SO much strain off the other componants in front of them..   Regearing is the correct way to do it.
