Eating the fan belt...

I seem to be eating the backside (engine side) of the fan belt. The engine is a 1600 8V out of a 94 tracker, that i installed in my Sami a few weeks back. It "appears" that the drive pulley (motor pulley) is sticking out farther than the alternator and water pump pulleys. I did not notice this til now. Doesn't mean it wasn't out before. Bought a new belt to put on tomorrow and it seems a tad narrower than the one that is on there now. I can't picture the pulley "moving out" so ???? Ideas? Thanks.

If the pulley looks like it moved in or out it could be your harmonic balancer is shot?
I had one on a mitsubishi that was spinning on the rubber ring thats built into
the balancer. It would move back and forth on the balancer hub.

they are internally balanced
I would check and see how much end thrust you have on the crank
also check and see maybe the pulley has been assembled funny and has a spacer behind it

The belts tend to rub the timing cover,
pretty normal on a Zuk

from my experience I have had 3 samis and a kick I have never had a belt problem rubbing on the cover

check the condition of the pulleys if the belt is bottomed in the pulley or you can see the bottom of the pulley is shiney then the pulleys are worn out

Then your lucky I have had 1 sami and 6 Track/Kicks and all of them have marks on the timing cover where the belt has rubbed them a time or two

Well, got it off. The rubber gasket (?) between the harmonic balancer and the pulley does look pretty frayed. Does someone have one they can look at and tell me the measurement from the front of the balancer to the back of the mount? Then I could see if that is the problem. Thanks guys!

There is only a plain steel pulley, you may
have A/C or Power Steering, but there is
no rubber in the belt drive pulley.

The pulley bolts with 5 small bolts to the
cam cog, and the cam cog has 1 large bolt
in the center to hold it on.

Post some pics so we can see what you
are looking at

Well, it's not the pulley or balancer! After removing the timing belt cover, the bottom, crank, pulley is setting between 1/4 and 1/2" forward of the belt! Which means? I assume the pulley has moved forward, possibly the bolt was loose, although it tested tight fri. Anyhow, I'm concerned about timing if I pull it off and reset it. Ideas? Thanks. This is more fun than I can stand.

I agree with wild on this. 

What you are describing does not jive with my experiences -- which are too many for my liking.

Let's see some pics.  I know it's a tight place at the front of the engine - If you have a small mirror, that would be helpful in seeing what is going on.

Dig in, it's loads of fun  ;)

OK, sounds like your big bolt in the center
(17mm) is loose or missing, or the threads
in the crank are stripped out  :o

Give it a go, don't be afriad of the timing, we
can help you get it all back together, it's not
hard to set. Start with the crank halfmoon key
at 12'O clock, check the cam position, notch
should point down on an 8V, pin in the cam
should be at the 12'O clock position too.

It's easier to remove the radiator to do this,
but it's your choice, it can be done with it in,
but if you need to use an impact (recomended)
you will need it out.

DA-DAH! The mystery has been solved! Did I forget to mention the $500 prize to the person that had the correct answer? Oh, well.
Remember, my neighbor and I are half-ass mechanics. We were working against a time imit--I had to get this thing running or walk to work--16 miles. I got to looking at the pulley and the timing belt pulley and it had to be....got my neighbor over, I told him what I thought it was--he was truly sad since he was the one that installed the timing pulley---BACKWARDS. Flipped it around and, presto, bingo, everything is fine. Thanks all for trying to help a hapless mechanic. Well, I won't do it twice!!
