speedometer cable replacement...
« on: January 14, 2006, 06:18:17 AM »
The '96 Tracker is making a lot of noise in the dash gage assembly that I think is caused by the speedometer's drive cable rubbing against the inside of it's cover.

Is it possible to fix this without having to replace the entire assembly?   Perhaps pull out the drive cable from the transfer case end and slide in a new one?

You can try pulling out the instrument
cluster, and putting some light machine
oil, like 3in1 or sewing machine oil, it
will creep down the tube and quiet things
up, if thats the problem. ATF would probably
also work if you don't have any of the other
stuff

I was thinking of sliding out the cable from the T-case end, inspecting it for damage, loading it up with Lithium grease and then re-inserting it.  However, the laws of physics probably won't be in my favor with that procedure.   To be honest, I need a break from dash disassembly after removing and re-installing the multi-switch assembly this week >:( .

Thanks!

The speedo assembly is easy,
just the screws around the frame
and screws on the assembly, like
6 or 8 in all

Don't use grease unless it is specified
for speedo cables, most of the time it's
too thick and will cause cable wrap up,
especially in cold weather

i'm having problems with my speedo too, after months of broken cable, i decided to put new ones, and at speeds of 60km/h or higher my speedo will start to make a whining noise then my reading will jump to around 110 km/h :o :o :o, but below 60 everything is fine :P

I am currently getting a lot of noise in the dash and the speedometer used to bounce around a lot.  When I pulled it apart I found out the speedometer was broken, not the cable.
