Reset 'code 12' blinking
« on: November 10, 2005, 12:40:16 PM »
Hi guys,

I picked up my vitara tuesday. It's a 1990 vitara with 1.6l engine.
The check engine light keeps blinking and it's getting pretty annoying.
it blinks once, pause, 2 blinks, so a code 12 = everything fine.

the thing is however it keeps repeating this indefinately..
I looked in the engine compartment if the wires to set off the code where crossed, nothing.
I checked for the diagnostic fuse, but I don't have a raised fuse in my fuseblock.
I also searched for a switch but couldn't find it :(

Does anyone have an idea on how to turn the damn light off?

sounds like someone left a jumper in the diagnostic plug ...

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy it.

That's what I thought, but I checked the fusebox under the steering wheel and I can't find the diagnostic switch there, it doesn't have a raised fuse-holder.

I also checked under the hood and near the battery I see a plug (which I think is the diagnostic plug), it's covered with a rubber. there's nothing in it :(

Any other ideas?

--edit--
I just checked again and the above is absolutely true.. could it be the european vitara's are different?

My diagnostic plug is at the front above the offside headlight. I have a plug by the battery but its not the diagnostic plug. Is your model Jap or Spanish?

I have no idea if mine is spanish or jap.
I bought in the netherlands, used to be a german car.

I'll check near the headlight tomorrow

Thanks for helping me out!

Nothing near the headlights :(
The only plug that looks like the diagnostic plug is near the battery but no jumper in it or something.

Guess there's nothing left but driving to the dealer..

I am really clueless

Could be a short in the wiring. The plug that you found - what colours are the wires going to it? Also what is on your VIN plate, mine says Santana Motor and not Suzuki.

Hi immo,
disconnect the battery for more than 20 seconds-that should work; if not, some vitaras had a reset-switch under the dashboard, somewhere near the left speaker!
Good luck!

Remove the left dash speaker and feel around to the right of the opening (these directions are assuming you're sitting in the seat facing the dash, hunkered over and cursing).  There should be a small up and down switch in there.

On my 93 US model Tracker it was black.  I'm going to be looking for the one on my 1990 Tracker tomorrow as I have a feeling my CHECK ENGINE light is spurious.

In my fuse block I have a spade type fuse
socket that is labled Diag, it is printed on the
cover, so if the cover is gone, you might not
see it, but if you have one there, you should
not have all the fuse sockets filled, I think my
Diag terminal is on the right side of the block,
and seems to me it's also the farthest from the
seat, bottom as you look at it from under the dash
