any auto tranny gurus out there?
« on: November 09, 2005, 03:38:22 PM »
Hey, guys.

I got some issues I need resolved.
I have been dealing with the tranny in my '90 tracker not shifting when cold. I pulled the tranny along with the engine when I rebuilt the engine. I pulled the pan and installed a new kick down cable. When I put the thing back together, and drove the Tracker the first few times, the tranny shifted perfect. After about the 5th trip, the tranny started refusing to shift again. It didn't do this when I first bought it, but started when the Tracker sat up for a few weeks without any attention.

Now. It is way worse. It would usually shift after driving a short distance... say 1/4 mile... but now, it won't shift for over a mile... and this is often after letting the engine idle and warm up. The thing is, that once it shifts, it shifts fine for the rest of the trip. Many moons ago, if you parked it up at the mall for acouple of hours, it still worked just fine. Now, if you leave it parked for more than an hour, it hangs up again.

I pulled the vaccuum modulator, and put vaccuum on it. No leaks.
The symptoms are exactly like a failed or disconnected vaccuum modualtor on older cars I have fooled with years ago. Am I looking at an internal pressure problem with the tranny? Rebuild time?

Taking opinons.

If the cable is still good, then I would look
at the valve body having particles of the wear
items causing some valve sticking, look to see
if the modulator actuated valve is sticking, since
the problem seems to be of that sort.

I have never had any trouble with my trans, but
it has always needed a quart of fluid once a month
to keep the level up, small drip/leak, so I have had
fresh fluid getting into the trans all the time, helping
keep the plates good and the fluid clean.

I did have a problem with the trans doing a neutral
drop kind of thing after freeway cruising and stopping
at an offramp, after I changed the fluid and added a
bottle of Slick50 Auto Trans treatment, never did it again

I used my magnetic retriver to pull the little piston from the tranny when I pulled the modulator to inspect it. Came out and went in smoothly. Good snug fit...

I have checked the fluid multiple times. Always right on. I can try the Slick50, though... I do tend to stay away from "treatments".
