axle swap
« on: March 21, 2005, 04:04:02 PM »
I have heard of swaping in toyota axles because the stock ones on a sami are not as strong. but how about other axles such as wrangler ones. I dont really know much about it and it sounds pretty complicated but what ever any one knows about this would be really helpful thanks. :)

this is on my wish list also.  i am not sure but i dont really think it matters, people just use the toy ones cause they are easy to get and nearly the same width and should help that they are prob metric stuff too. i saw first hand the ones that Mesjr2004 is putting together.  WOW!  better know how to weld good and be able to fab up stuff well too.  its doable but with much work for just one person.  which by the way Mesjr2004 is doing a rockin job on his trackick ;)  there might be a gear ratio thing to consider also?  do a search for a while on here i know you will find alot of good info :)  also with a sami i think you can just get stronger axle shafts.  again search around 8)

Thanks alot for the info. do you know what the biggest tires you would want to put on the stock axles are? I have heard 33's but would the axles break easily with anything much bigger?

I think it all depends on how ya drive it.  A buddy of mine had 35" under his sami with stock axels and breakage never really seemed to be a problem.  I only remember him breaking one front axel.  He did run Birfield rings in the front of his though.
But, then again, another friend of mine that likes to lean on his a little more has had a few axel issues with his 33's, so he's going back to 31's.

Tyre size also depends on the type of tyre the Real Red Sammi runs 35/12.50 MudRovers on stock axles just 5.38's and he pounds the daylights out of the truck and hasn't had any axle concerns.
The MudRover is a fairly light mud tyre compared to say a Bogger if he ran 35" Boggers on stock axles it might be a different story :o

with 33's the stock axles should hold up great this is offroad remember no matter how big and badass u build ur rig u can always find ways to break it. 33's locked in the rear open in the front i would say u would be hard pressed to do any damage. if u keep an eye on the garage sale forum there r toy axles forsale often some r alresdy set up for sami's and ready to go. good luck.

I have some pictures of my toy axle swap I did over the winter if your interested.  I am running 33x12.5x15 tires Locked F/R.  This may give you some Ideas.

Its not exactly a "bolt on" process.  I did it because I came across them a while ago as a part of some trading I did.  I went up to 33" tire and wanted the piece of mind of a more bullet proof setup.

you need to go to granitepath.com and see nate and heathers.land cruiser axles under a 4 door kick on 35s and could easaly go38s. yes anything is possable.but the problem would be the possitioning and possable lack of powerfrom your 45 50 hrs power engine. also depends on how much you are willing to spend. new drive lines are a must, and very good welding skills helps. i did all the welding on there kick it wasent to bad to fit up.
