I'm familiar with ESD (unix sys admin for 10 yrs..) - took the same precautions I use while upgrading my pc components:

work in the kitchen on a tile floor, barefoot, using a wooden table

But did you actually earth youself? I have a basic ESD bench here, I just bought an inexpensive kit from an electronics supplier. If I have to open my ECU then I take it to work cos its too expensive to risk.
I suggested a radio shop as they are usually much cheaper than an ECU specialist who will charge $250 for swapping a couple of caps.

Sorta - my feet were dirty  :)

Something I read somewhere, sometime ago, about something ESD in relation to working on PCs  suggested just following convenient basic principals - stay off carpet until your done, work in a kitchen if you have tile floors, and before you begin touch your stove or refrigerator cabinet.
Never had a problem with damaging CPUs (which I've upgraded a ton of over the years - and my guess is CPUs are lot more sensitive to static damage than these old ECM electronics).

I remember hearing somewhere that when working on your PC, leave it plugged in to a grounded outlet, too... can't quite do that with an ECM though...
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...

Plugged in ?!?   I'd be more worried about electrical damage to myself than the PC.

I used to sell computer parts, I remember one day I
had stopped and bought a few sticks of RAM (PC133
256 MB) and as usual I stuck them in my front shirt
pocket as I exited the Zuke. Well as I got out of the
Trucklet the door came back and hit me, right on my
memory sticks  :o  and I felt a static shock and thought
Ohh great ........ Lucky me not one was damaged, I don't
know why not, just lucky I guess

my kickdown cable is broken where it should attach to the throttle body - tried repairing it with one of those electrical wire connectors that crimp onto each end but not suprisingly it didn't hold

having trouble finding a source for a replacement cable - tried calling all the local parts stores and ebay searches - any suggestions on where to get a replacement kickdown cable?
