Hey all, I have replaced cap, rotor, wires, plugs among other things. It cranks about four times before starting when cold. It seems to have a misfire all the time but pronounced before warming up to normal temperature. Sometimes when I pull out right after starting it will sputter some when not at full operating temperature. Compression is good. Set valve gap again Today on warm engine(hot) was pretty much right on from setting cold. It also smells rich worse when cold but still smells rich when hot but not as bad. New exhaust is black at the tip. I noticed Today when I start it cold and rev it hard it spits soot and water-clear water and stains the drive and some white smoke comes out. Is this just condensation? It is 80 degrees plus here and rained all night. Exhaust tone is throaty, deep but I hear a miss in my opinion. I feel a slight shakeing at stop signs when warmed up and hear a slight rough idle. When cold star I feel a more pronounced shake and missing.
I can be a perfectionist so maybe being too picky. When I bought it I got about 18 MPG but I have got it up to around 22 MPG now. Took the hard top off Yesterday and could smell the exhaust at every stop but really smell it when cold. Maybe I am just used to my Toyota motors and such. I have read EVERY post on here and many other boards. I haven't tried an O2 sensor. I ran it while watching the spray pattern of the fuel in the TB and it seemed to spray a circle of fuel right on the throttlr plate, butterfly and just right on the plate. When I revved it and let it snap back the fuel stops for a split second. I did change the fuel filter btw. It has 71500 miles, auto. Also noticed when I pulled the tranny dip stick it was all crusty along the length of it. I added Dexron 3 i quart and shows at top hot mark when hot-hope I didn't overfill it. If I did I will change the filter and fill it again.
Thanks,

Change the O2
BTW I never have been able to see
the fuel cone spray on my Kick.

You might also need a new Cat, a rich
running engine seems to burn/wear
them out, and then you will smell a "rich"
smell in the exhaust, even when all is right

Use your timing light to see the spray. The stobe makes it freeze or appear to. I spent $435 on the exhaust last month. New cat,Thorley header, muffler and 2 inch exhaust pipe-aluminized. I am going to try ordering a new cap, rotor, wires and coil from the dealer if I keep it.
Thanks,

Well a new Cat that is only a month should still be good.
I think the O2 should be checked or replaced, and check
your vacuum lines to the MAP sensor, it will run bad and
rich, blow smoke and idle really bad rough if the MAP is
getting a bad/no vacuum signal.

The MAP is a little black box sort of close to the battery,
and is bolted to the firewall. Check the lines for unhooked
or broken condition, and the MAP it's self could be bad.

Hope  you can find the problem

No codes for map or o2 sensors. Checked the lines to map and they appear to be fine.
Thanks,

A code will onlly show if there is an out of
range reading, like no signal or a direct ground.

However, if your MAP is saying low vacuum, like
a WOT situation, but is still in the right range in
the reading, the computer is thinking we need
more fuel, and injects it

You might have a worn out or leaking injector,
too much fuel would be getting thru and making
it run rich.

The point here is there must be a reason you
are running rough, even if it's a computer that
has a corrupted table or some other problem.
Your job is to figure it out, codes or no codes

Just checked the coil with an ohm meter - Primary resistance: 1.5 Ohms Secondary: 27.5 KOhms . I thought AHAAA according to Haynes this is wrong. Checked online info at Autozone and it is very close to right on the Primary and correct in the Secondary--- Damn--- which one is right? Probably not Haynes since it is full of errors.... I need to check a new one but don't have one....
Thanks,
