How do you take the body off a samurai?
« on: August 06, 2005, 02:09:28 PM »
Hi All,

My samurai is still at work as I need to sort my garage out.
When it comes home I want to remove the body for a complete back to chassis rebuild, can any recommend a good workshop manual that shows how to take it off?

Or are there any threads on here on how to do it?

Regards

Nik

Hi Nik

Taking the body off is never the hard part unless all the nuts are rusted solid. Do you have a lot of rust ?   Puting it all back together is the hard part.  Are you familiar with Chilton and Haynes auto repair manuals? They are available at most auto part stores for abt $20.  There is no manual for body removal that I am aware of.  Just crawl under there and you will see what holds the body on.  Taking something apart is always easier than put it back together...

The wiring harness and steering will be the hard part. Make lots of notes and diagrams as you remove stuff. Group nuts and bolts in plastic bags and mark what they do. Take pictures...they will be invaluable for the rebuilding process. If you run into specific problems, bring them to the board. This board is mostly Track / Kick / Vit  oriented but there are those of us who also have a pension for becoming overly familiar with our Sams....good luck on your project.

Do a search for Samurai body lift. That should give you lots of info on where the mounts are, what type they are and any problems you can expect.
2000 Vitara 1.6, 3+3 Lift, 33"MTs, 5:83s, LWB brakes, Winch, Snorkel, Safari Rack

Thanks for the info, I will go for the Haynes manual as they have them here in the UK.

As for Rust (English weather, mud and crap from 6 previous owners over the last 17 years).

Not sure if any of the nuts and bolts shill have heads on them!!!!

Watch this space for more questions.

Be patient, it should rust off eventually ;)
