making a strut brace for 3" body lifted vit
« on: April 27, 2005, 02:27:29 AM »
i wasnt sure about posting up in Kozaz's thread, as some people may take it as a hi-jack.

anyway, there is a lot of ideas and discussion going on with front end mods concerning IFS.

i have always wanted to use a strut brace for my vit, but because i have a 3" body lift, its a bit trickier to sort out.

does anyone have any pics or has anyone made one? i'm not too keen on cutting up the inner guards...yet, but if it comes to that then so be it.

in many on road cars which use a strut in the sus system, the strut support/towers tend to flex a fair bit under heavier than usual driving. this to the average person wont matter a whole heap, but for the sports/race driver, every bit of rigidity counts. this results in proper and more precise suspension movement, allowing the strut to travel and work as it was designed.

now, we dont do a lot of high speed stuff, except a few who like jumping kicks, but if i am not mistaken, a strut has a lot of forces acting upon it. it need to hold the hub and spindle, it faces all the forces of steering, and there is no upper arm to deal with all the braking forces. which goes to show how important the 3 little bolt that hold it up are. or the single nut on the shaft. so, if there was a strut brace to brace the chassis and strut towers, and maybe to the firewall also, then wouldnt there be a more positve feel and better movement front the struts.

coils also play a part, but they only hold up the car. anyway, i apologise for a long and agonising post, but if anyone could suggest how a strut brace is possible to make with a 3" BL, thanks.

cheers.
steve.

(ps, i am real sorry for a long post, i am tired and have been working 12 hours days for the past 2 weeks. i also do not have much time to use the comp/internet. thanks)

The old Procomp kit came with a strut brace. James Holloway has modified his to suit the 3" bodylift. He just welded on some extensions to lower the mountings. I have heard of a number of people bending the stut towers, they are only a bit of pessed steel after all. It does sound like a good idea as they do keep all the front suspension in alignment. I haven't got any pics of James' setup but you could try posting on difflock.com as he sometimes hangs out there.

On my zuki (4" chassis drop on the front) i just cut the inner wing away and made a brace which runs around the front of the engine, u need an electric fan.
