RRO JPeater SPUA  good or bad?
« on: April 29, 2005, 03:04:36 AM »
I would like comments on the Rocky Road JP-eater kit to use YJ springs in a SPUA configuration.  I am not looking for high lift or articulation.  I want to improve the ride and highway maners primarily.

Has anyone used this or know someone who has and what are the good or bad comments you can make.

Also I have heard some negative comments about RRO but nobody is specific.  What is the main problems with them as a supplier???

I'm interested in any experience you guys can offer too, currently running a Calmini shackle reversal and looking to change over to YJ SPUA using this kit, specifically is there any additional dirveshaft or steering correction required when using this in a SPUA configuration, Thanks  ;)

Delivery times with Glenn used to be a problem, not sure if they still are. He's busier than a one-legged hooker in a $1 all you can get brothel.

I used to run the Trail Tough SJ413 rear springs up front, CJ fronts in the rear on my Sami. Was the best suspension combo at the time and it was my 6th variant of the suspension, was also the last because with the right shocks and mounts I could acheive 45" of articulation and it rode like a caddy.

Steering: GO knuckle over! Don't bother with anything else. In fact do that with any SPOA conversion.

Panhard rod: I feel would be neccesary because of the length of the springs to keep on-road steering feel normal and keep off-road steering controlled. I ran one on mine and it didn't do much on-road but off-road steering response was MUCH improved, turned on a pin head!

I've only seen the YJ leaf conversions in person, never rode in them but they seem to flex better than my old setup. Couldn't comment on ride.

Your driveshafts will most likely need to be lenghtened because it pushes the axles out quite a bit. For the rear get a high angle HD CV system and the front might be passable with 2 spacers.

The review I did of TT missing link system is still up on off-road.com. I later removed the missing links and installed 3" long shackles, off-road the chattering was bugging the crap outa me. Flex didn't degrade either.

I'm glad to hear of somone else talking of SPUA since most don't.  I am considering either buying this kit from RRO or building my own setup using a shackle reversal.  No one makes what I really want.  If I do a shackle reversal it will entail arching  the front springs more in the front (they call them sled runner springs around here)  to avoid messing up the approach angle and to get the axle oriented correctly so the allignment will not require shims.  If I do this I will aim at a 2 inch lift.

I think a properly done shackle reversal is much preffered to the original setup.  I would like your opinion on what you have.  We have a lot of wind and large trucks out here and with the standard shackle location you get a lot of "wind steer"  with the wheelbase changing length due to side winds.  (Wind Steer-- the leeward side wheelbase elongates, the wind side contracts due to body shift and that turns you toward wind and then the larger cross section on the rear of the Samurai with the top up causes the rear to drift out and increase the turning moment)

Well here is a quick rundown of my experience with RRO....

I won an auction on eBay for a 6" bolt on lift for my Samurai. Auction stated 8-10 days to ship. No problem. I also added 4 DT shocks to the order. Total $$$ well over $600.

When the time had expired, I began calling. They were out of u bolts.....and kept that excuse for a week or so, each day they swore their supplier had shipped them overnight the day before, should have them today. I was calling every day and getting the same ole...so one day I thought I better ask if EVERYTHING else was in stock...well turns out it was a damn good thing I asked....they only had one set of DT rear shocks left. I begged the guy to put them aside for me so I didn't have to go thru waiting for another item come in.....finally he did although he claimed he was not supposed to.

After something like 18-20 days.....my lift finally shipped. (I noticed a guy who won the same lift on the same day waited over 30 days!!! Good thing I called daily)

When the lift arrived.....it was in a box that was twice the needed size.....and NOTHING was packed tightly....it was literally just tossed in the box so some of the parts had been scratched up a tad, not a huge deal but something a guy notices. Also, there were no instructions enclosed and since I got it Friday evening when I got home from work, they were not open again till Monday (I tried to call several times) so I had no choice but to install w/o any directions (I had set aside the weekend just for that to get done).....which was no big deal...just kinda irritated me after everything else that happened.

THEN....seeing how my experience with them was not so good....I left them "neutral" feedback on eBay stating the facts (main issue was that the ship time was double what was promised). I thought I was being nice only giving them neutral and they retaliated against me by also giving ME a neutral rating with a snide comment. Keep in mind I paid on the spot when I won the auction and was understanding about the delays every time I talked to them on the phone...I was not a jerk at all. There was NO reason to give me bad feedback other than they were pissed and did so in retaliation. I also looked back at past feedback they gave people.....and every time someone like me gave RR bad feedback.....they got it in return. Period. Talk about childish and unprofessional.

So then I emailed Glenn (the owner) and explained the whole thing and asked that he withdraw the feedback his company left me (ruining my absolutely perfect eBay ratings). He answered me and accused me of having double standards and then would no longer answer any further emails.....

Double standards huh??? That guy has a screwed up sense of reality.....and his company will never see another dime of mine. Period.

I put a set of rear springs up front with the over-load removed and it gave my SJ-410 a lot smoother ride.  I can actually blast thru mud puddles without fear of bouncing off the road!  Now I just need some new shocks in the back...

As for just putting the springs on yourself, it should be easy enough.  It's not like you are building a 4-link system, just cut off your existing mounts on the frame, weld on some mounts from a YJ or make some yourself, and bolt it to your axle.  :)
