Rear Spool?
« on: May 03, 2005, 05:09:57 AM »
Hey all;

I can get my hands on a spool for the back of my 91 track/kick. for $100 all set-up and inculding the 3rd member. I know that is a deal and since it's all set-up it's easy to install. I drive that thing every day in the city... so Questions:

How hard is it to put one in (in my situation)?
How bad is it on the tire wear?
Shall I expect it to chrip / click/ bang?
How is the drivablity in different weather?
Is it worth even thinking about?

Thanks all..

Wil

How hard is it to put one in (in my situation)?

Do you live IN the city? Its easy but I wouldn't do it on in a city street.

How bad is it on the tire wear?

Probably pretty bad if your making 90deg turns in the city every day. I cant even notice any unusuall wear and mines a DD with 33's. But Im not making alot of turns.

Shall I expect it to chrip / click/ bang?

Just the tires "barking" (basicly just 90deg turns) Othere than that it a bit harder to turn the wheel.

How is the drivablity in different weather?

Im fine with it, You just have to watch gassing it around corners, b/c its reall easy to brake the tires loose in the rain and snow. I prefer it like that. I don't like how lockers lock up sometimes unexpectedly. But I rock one up front though so I can turn in 4Wheel.

Is it worth even thinking about?

Are you crazy? Youll be able to wheel through stuff in two wheel that you had a hard time in 4 wheel. And thats a STEAL!!! Thats the price of the spool alone.

Swapping a third is easy ...

How bad is it on the tire wear?

It will wear em down faster.

Yup turning tight corners with traction, one tire will have to slip (causing a chirp). No click or bang.

Turning on ice can cause the rear to break free (one tire has to slip). Not any worse than a lockrite type tho IMO.

Sure is nice offroad, but "every day in the city" might not be your best choice.

If you drive in the city (pizza delivery driver), with an overweight truck (lots of gear), expect worn tires, and twisted/broken splines on axles.

oh i've seen um bang before but thats just the axle shafts breaking.

I have my spider gears welded(cheap spool) and i try not to drive it on the street.   i have gone though 2 sets of axles shafts in 2 years because of twisting spines.  but i also run a 34in tall tire so i have alot of added stress.

I expect the 34's cause the "bang" more than the weld/spool  ;D

I've been running my spool on 31's for 4 months now (onroad, and hard offroad). No bang yet. I'm going to pull the shafts in the next month to look for signs of twist ... (and I got virgin spares to use if there is any ...).
