I broke my transmission yesterday and have found one at the local pic-a-part but need an estimate of transmission weight to decide whether I need my jack or can if I can bench press it?  

Well, it's a lot easier to bench press it with the transfer case off it, but you can't do THAT until you've dropped 'em both, and put them back together with the top bolt left out.  Yeah, it's possible to get it OUT without a jack, but I wouldn't wanna try to put it IN without one...  Well, nevermind, I DID put mine in without a jack - the jack was just too much of a PITA.

If it is a Sami trans, with a shipping box, it weighs about 65 pounds.  

I shipped one to Asian Auto Parts of AZ to have it rebuilt.

You do not need to take the T-case Out. Thats a compleat wast of time. AND I don't think it would even make it any easier anyway.

Take a hack saw with you and cut that nasty cross member out of your way it will make it alot easyer to get out.

I took mine out by myself, and had a buddy help me lift it back in, didn't take much time at all really.  Easiest thing to do since I had a body lift was lift one end up, stick a 2x4 across the frame to hold that end, lift the other, stick another board, then go from there...kept it from crushing me anyway if it slipped. It's not so much heavy as it is cumbersome because it is so long, the transfer case is on the end and it is narrow and tall so it wants to roll.

Well, a week ago, I had a day off of work, and decided I, myself, would try to see what was up in my Kicker 3 case. This means pulling out my samurai crossmember, taking out the samurai case, and then pulling out the kicker 3 case. Luckily - I didn't have to take the tranny out because I left that top bolt out of it that is under the shift box.

But, my truck is too high for a jack, you can sit up crosslegged under it. And I took the cases out, and, put them back in. Myself. My feet helped me.   And I'm a girl.

And NO.. my Kicker 3 case STILL isn't fixed...

I put a 2x4 across the windshield frame, and the b pillar hoop. I just opened the top, and dropped the 2x4 across. I think used a rachet strap underneither where the tranny and t-case met, racheted it as high as I could, then just crawled under the bell housing, and swung it into place with my arms and legs as guides. Pretty easy, really!

Oh, the rachet strap went right thru where the shifter pokes out of the tranny tunnel!

I've removed and replaced the tranny and t-case without a jack.
I did it with some help from a buddy to bolt the bell housing up while I held the rest of it.
